| In the context of the universalization of higher education, even for people with a master’s degree, they have to put more effort into preparing for work.Faced with the choice of different career directions, one needs to prepare accordingly. For this reason, this study focuses on master’s degree students who are seeking employment and explores how they prepare for obtaining a job.Using qualitative research methods,42 master’s degree students from University of H who were looking for jobs or had already found jobs were selected for this study, and in-depth interviews were conducted with 42 master’s degree students from various disciplines on research and employment. The study found that there were strong individual differences in the perceptions of "good jobs" and job search actions. At the same time, this individual difference is characterized by group characteristics.Since this paper only studied master’s students from University of H,the professional differences in career preparation were more prominent.Four classifications were formed accordingly, namely competitive technical jobs, stable technical jobs, stable social jobs, and competitive social jobs. For computer and communication masters students, they correspond to large Internet factories and stable technical jobs. There are four aspects of preparation for students to enter the technical posts of large companies: brush up on their skills,do promising projects, internship and participate in competitions. To enter the technical post of research institute, students are required to have 985,211 and professional counterparts, and they are prepared to do projects and send papers. For master’s students in English and education, most of them recognize stable social type jobs, such as civil servants.Master’s degree, political appearance and experience as student leaders are what they look for.The preparation done by students includes two aspects: running for student cadres and brushing up on essay questions. For master’s degree students in economics and management, most of them have competitive social jobs in real estate and investment banking. This kind of job prefers talents with "finance+" complex knowledge, master’s degree from famous universities and lively and outgoing personality. The preparation for students includes two aspects: internship and certification. There is a big similarity in the job search process of master’s students: they believe in the value of a diploma.A master’s degree is a "hard standard" that must be met to enter a profession in exchange for a chance at a "good job".To get a full job,a diploma is not enough;they need to be prepared for the other requirements of the job. Finally, the study further discusses and reflects on the career preparation of master’s students in three aspects: higher education diversion and the labor market, the relationship between academics and employment, and the meaning of master’s education,in order to inform the relevance and shortcomings of graduate education. |
