At present,independent colleges have become an important part of China’s private higher education,making outstanding contributions to the development of China’s higher education.Since 2008,under the promotion of national policies,the transformation of independent colleges has been successively promoted across the country.Since 2020,the transformation efforts have been further intensified.The Ministry of Education issued policies to require all independent colleges across the country to transform as soon as possible.Hubei Province has the largest number of independent colleges in the country.It is worth paying attention to how these colleges and universities can achieve sustainable development after the transformation.This dissertation uses the sustainable competitive advantage theory in enterprise management as the theoretical basis,and combines the characteristics of the transformation and development of independent colleges to construct a sustainable competitive advantage model for the transformation and development of independent colleges.The model is mainly composed of three modules—basic platform,transition power and transition path,and 11 elements that have an impact on the generation of sustainable competitive advantage.By using the model,starting from the elements involved in each module,this thesis studies on the sustainable development of Hubei Independent College after the transformation.First of all,this dissertation adopts the document analysis.By sorting out important policy documents and other materials related to the transformation of Hubei Independent Colleges,this dissertation analyzes the development process of Hubei Independent Colleges and the current development environment for the transformation.Based on the model,the thesis analyzes the current development status of the 17 independent colleges that have been transformed in Hubei Province.The results show that colleges have achieved remarkable development in terms of school-running conditions,school-running capabilities,school-running characteristics,and college cultural prestige.However,there are still problems such as unreasonable top-level design,serious lack of resources,campus culture construction and school characteristics to be strengthened,lack of innovation motivation,and inability to guarantee student customer value.Secondly,this dissertation takes Wenhua College as a case study.For data collection,the dissertation adopts the approaches of combining textual data and interviews.On the one hand,the author analyzes the development process and current situation of Wenhua College by collecting information from the official websites of the government,schools,and media.On the other hand,the author conducts interviews with relevant personnel of the college,and digs deeply into a series of development strategies and existing problems after the transformation of the College.Specifically,this dissertation studies Wenhua College based on the model of sustainable competitive advantage,sorts out various key measures in the process of establishing its own sustainable competitive advantage,and analyzes the existing advantages and disadvantages.The study found that: in the basic platform module,Wenhua College has gradually established a competitive advantage through four aspects: actively adapting to the external environment,attaching importance to the cultivation of school-running resources,continuously improving school-running capabilities,and continuously improving the organizational structure.Through outstanding leaders leading the overall situation,actively building the "Red Maple" campus characteristic culture,constantly exploring the development path of personalized education characteristics,and striving to improve the dynamic coordination ability,it provides an inexhaustible driving force for the sustainable competitive advantage.In the transition path module,Wenhua College strengthens strategic flexibility through a multi-level planning system in formulating development plans,insists on continuous innovation,and actively conducts development plans around customer value.In addition,the current development of Wenhua College is also facing some problems.In the basic platform module,the policy environment needs to be improved,funds are short,teachers are still weak,and the talent training ability needs to be further improved;in the transition power module,there are currently problems such as relying on core leaders,and the characteristics of running schools need to be further explored;In the transition path module,there are problems such as continuous innovation facing challenges and customer value to be improved.Finally,based on the research results of the overall independent college transform development in Hubei Province and the case university transform development situation,starting from the constructed model,this dissertation puts forward countermeasures and suggestions from three modules: basic platform,transition power and transition path.
