As an exploration and attempt at the reform of graduate education,the integrated doctoral student is an outstanding undergraduate or master’s student selected for early admission into the doctoral training stage,with a focus on cultivating top innovative talents.This study focuses on integrated doctoral students,including those who pursue doctorates immediately after completing their undergraduate studies and those in combined master’s and doctoral programs.Using in-depth interviews,questionnaire surveys,and textual analysis,the study analyzes the current status of the research abilities of integrated doctoral students,their influencing factors,and their characteristics in terms of attitudes,decision-making,and behavior.The main findings of the study are as follows:Firstly,the evolution process of China’s continuous doctoral training policy can be divided into three stages: initial germination,pilot exploration and improvement and development.As a reform of the enrollment system,with its advantages of consistency of research direction,unity of supervisor guidance and refinement of training links,efficiency and quality are placed in a continuous talent training system,focusing on improving the scientific research ability of doctoral students.In the specific practice process,Firstly,the evolution process of China’s integrated doctoral education policy can be divided into three stages: initial exploration,pilot testing,and improvement and development.As a reform of the enrollment system,its advantages such as consistency in research direction,uniformity in tutor guidance,and feasibility of selection and diversion place efficiency and quality in a continuous talent training system,focusing on improving the research ability of doctoral students.In the specific practice process,there are still problems such as unclear training programs and obstacles to the circulation of master’s and doctoral degrees,which urgently need further improvement.Secondly,in terms of research ability,integrated doctoral students have a high self-recognition rate of the five research literacy skills: familiarity with research ethics,academic expression ability,professional knowledge,management and execution ability,and team cooperation ability,all of which exceed 80%.However,the recognition degree of the five research literacy skills,including academic ambition,interdisciplinary knowledge,innovative thinking,independent research ability,and paper writing ability,is lower than 70% and needs to be further improved.Among them,the paper writing ability of integrated doctoral students is the lowest and needs to be strengthened in the process of integrated doctoral education.Thirdly,the factors affecting the research literacy and research achievements of integrated doctoral students show significant differences.Environmental factors have a significant impact on the research literacy of integrated doctoral students.Among them,the impact coefficient of course connection setting,evaluation and assessment methods,and academic exchange lectures is the largest.The influential factors of research achievements are more concentrated,including background variables such as gender,school type,grade,tutor title,and disciplinary category.According to the results of multiple linear regression analysis,environmental factors and interaction factors have significant positive effects on research ability,and interaction factors have a significant mediating effect between environmental factors and research ability.Comparing the eigenvalue decomposition results of undergraduate direct doctoral students and master’s and doctoral students,it was found that the research ability of the latter is more affected by interactive factors,while the research ability of the former is more easily affected by environmental factors.Fourthly,in the process of improving research ability,integrated doctoral students are subject to the dual influence of environmental factors and interaction factors,and gradually develop research literacy and output research results by playing a subject role and using action strategies to cope with obstacles in academic growth.Currently,the integration of doctoral students with the institutional environment and organizational team is affecting the process of academic identity transformation and individual value migration,thereby promoting the rapid improvement of research ability.Overall,the institutional setup of integrated doctoral students aims at high-quality talent development,and the shortcomings of their shorter learning period need to be addressed through scientific institutional design.To achieve this,universities should create innovative mentor guidance models,focus on entry adaptation stages,improve teaching methods and build pressure support systems in the training process.At the same time,they should continue to improve evaluation and assessment systems,clarify the positioning of the doctoral qualification examination,and unblock the reverse flow mechanism between Master’s and Ph D programs.Only in this way can the research growth and model optimization of integrated doctoral students move towards organic unity,thereby fostering more competitive top-notch innovative talents. |
