| Spatial habits of mind and geospatial thinking are important components of spatial literacy, and intelligence level is one of the factors affecting geospatial thinking. It is important to explore the relationship between the above three and reveal the mechanism of spatial thinking habits on geospatial thinking to cultivate students’ geospatial thinking.Based on the current research status in the field of geospatial thinking, the research hypothesis that spatial thinking habits can positively influence geospatial thinking ability was made through literature review and theoretical deduction, while relatively mature measurement instruments were screened and identified, including the geospatial thinking ability test(STAT),the spatial habits of mind scale(SHOM),and intelligence level measurement tools. The study administered the test to a total of 395 students who selected geography in sophomore and junior years of high school in Shandong Province, and finally obtained valid sample of 350.Correlation analyses, independent samples t-tests,regression analyses and moderating effect test of spatial habits of mind, geospatial thinking, and intelligence level data showed that the current spatial habits of mind and geospatial thinking of secondary school students are at the middle level, and the spatial habits of mind are significantly different in the sample groups of different grades and genders.Geospatial thinking was significantly different in the sample groups of different grades, while the difference was not significant in the groups of different genders. However, both showed the characteristics of higher grade level > lower grade level and male level > female level.Under the condition of intelligence level as a covariate, spatial habits of mind had an extremely significant positive effect on geospatial thinking and significantly predicted the level of geospatial thinking to some extent. The predictive strength of each sub-dimension of spatial habits of mind on geospatial thinking was,in descending order, spatial concept use > visualization > spatial description > pattern recognition > spatial tool use.Intelligence level plays a negative moderating role in the influence of spatial habits of mind on geospatial thinking, and the lower the intelligence level, the greater the influence of spatial habits of mind on geospatial thinking. On this basis, teaching suggestions for cultivating students’ geospatial thinking are proposed based on two levels of research findings and factors influencing spatial habits of mind, including: observing spatial features to enhance ability of pattern recognition;using spatial language to enhance the tendency of spatial description;developing information processing ability to enhance the ability of visualization;and understanding the connotation of spatial concepts to enhance ability of spatial concept use, etc. |
