A sense of meaning in life is an individual’s perceived self-worth and significance,along with a clear and definite purpose in life.A sense of meaning in life has a significant impact on mental health as a proximal protective factor for psychological well-being.Appreciative social support is an individual’s feeling of intrinsic support provided by close people,while these individuals have the belief that they are respected and understood.Family closeness refers to the degree of emotional connectedness between family members.This study explores the relationship between perceived social support and a sense of meaning in life,and introduces the variable of family closeness to explore whether it mediates the relationship between perceived social support and a sense of meaning in life,thereby enriching national and international research on perceived social support and a sense of meaning in life.This study is divided into two parts.Study 1 administered a questionnaire to 1,607 junior high school students in Anhui and Henan provinces to explore the relationship between perceived social support,family closeness and sense of meaning in life.Study2 conducted group counselling on perceived social support for the experimental group.The results of the experiment showed that group counselling significantly improved the perceived social support of junior high school students and further enhanced their sense of meaningfulness.The specific findings of the study are as follows:(1)The sense of meaning of life of junior middle school students has no significant difference in gender,grade,the only child or not,but has significant difference in parents’ education level and family status.(2)Junior middle school students’ understanding of social support level has significant differences in gender,grade,mother’s education level and family status.(3)The family intimacy of junior middle school students has significant differences in different grades,family status and parental education level,but has no significant differences in gender and whether the only child or not.(4)Understand that social support is significantly positively correlated with sense of life meaning and family intimacy,and family intimacy is significantly positively correlated with sense of life meaning.(5)Family intimacy mediated the perception of social support and the sense of meaning in life.(6)Group psychological counseling can improve junior middle school students’ understanding of social support and further improve their sense of meaning in life.
