In the past three decades, the family planning and one-child policy have played an important role in slowing down China’s population growth rate, but they have also brought about serious social problems, namely the problem of the elderly who have lost their only child and their pension. As the implementors of national policies, they lost their only child due to a sudden accident, not only facing the problem of no one to support them, but also bear the great pain brought by the death of their child,so they cannot get a happy life in their old age.The elderly who lost their only child are faced with the double dilemma of material and spirit.Although the government has greatly solved the material factors of the elderly who lost their only child through the compensatory policy, the psychological influence caused by the loss of their only child is difficult to erase.Being in the shadow of losing one’s only child for a long time will easily make the elderly lose confidence in their later life, and their sense of life meaning will also be at a low level, which will bring great challenges to the elderly’s later life and even prompt them to have the idea of suicide.Alleviating the negative emotions caused by the loss of their only child, alleviating their inner pain, and enhancing their sense of life meaning is of great significance to the active aging of the elderly who have lost their only child. This study takes the elderly who lost their only child as the research object, takes narrative theory as the ideological guidance, and provides case intervention service for the case owner.First of all,the data of the subject was collected through semi-structured interview to understand the subject’s life and psychological status, and the researcher formally established a professional relationship with the subject.Secondly, the senile life meaning scale was used to pre-test the status quo of the subjects’ sense of life meaning. It was found that the subjects’ lack of sense of life meaning was as follows: lack of correct understanding of suffering, lack of initiative in life and passive acceptance of the loss of their only child. Then, according to the subjects’ low sense of life meaning, the researchers formulated the intervention plan with the subjects in combination with the intervention steps of narrative theory.Thirdly, intervention services were provided to clients through establishing trust relationship, narrative, externalization of problems, story rewriting and consolidation of positive effects. Finally, the researcher comprehensively evaluated the service effect of this case from the two dimensions of process evaluation and result evaluation, and put forward corresponding suggestions from the individual level, community level and social level to meet the spiritual needs of the elderly who lost their only child and improve their sense of life meaning. The results showed that the subjects gradually regained their interests and hobbies, the grief and negative effects brought by the loss of their only child were alleviated, and they were able to cope with their future life in old age with a more positive attitude, and their sense of life meaning was improved to some extent. In the process of intervention, the researcher always adhered to the basic principles of case work, such as confidentiality, respect and individuality, and actively used case work skills, such as listening, encouragement and empathy,to help the subjects enhance their confidence and improve their sense of meaning in life. After the case intervention, the researcher summarized and reflected on the problems and shortcomings in the intervention process,in order to provide reference for future research on improving the sense of life meaning of the elderly who lost their only child. The case for intervention services effectively reduced the director for the negative emotions, enhanced the egotism self-confidence and optimistic life attitude,to some extent, improved the director of the sense of life, can play a positive role for director to regain happiness in later life, also verified the narrative theory to improve the feasibility and effectiveness of sense of loss of the old man lives alone meaning.
