Interpersonal skills are essential social life skills for students.Secondary school students must have good interpersonal skills in order to better adapt to the development of society. In order to promote the overall development of students’ moral, intellectual, physical and aesthetic development, the Ministry of Education has also clearly pointed out the importance of cultivating positive psychological qualities, maintaining an optimistic mindset and teaching students to handle interpersonal relationships correctly. However, secondary school students are influenced by traditional education and exam-oriented education has become the core of education nowadays.Teachers, parents and schools pay less attention to the cultivation of students’ interpersonal skills, which leads to a lack of social guidance and a lack of interpersonal initiative and skills for secondary school students, which has led to deeper mental health problems. Therefore, this paper adopts the questionnaire method to investigate and analyse the interpersonal skills of all students in HE school. The findings of the questionnaire data were imported into SPSS26.0 for descriptive statistical analysis and one-way ANOVA,through which the differences between the interpersonal skills of students in different classes were found. In particular, the mean values of Culinary 1 and Culinary 2 classes were 99.81 and 99.57 respectively, with the two classes showing the lowest variability. In order to verify whether Culinary 1and Culinary 2 classes could be used as the experimental and control groups, this paper took an independent samples t-test and verified that the data found no significant difference between the two groups.Subsequently, after an 8-week interpersonal mental health education for the experimental class(Cooking 1),this paper again distributed questionnaires to the experimental class and the control class to collect the questionnaire data. The analysis of the data revealed that there was a significant difference in the interpersonal skills of the students in the experimental and control classes. In order to understand the effect of interpersonal mental health education classes on students’ interpersonal skills, this paper adopted an independent sample t-test to analyse the difference in interpersonal skills between the experimental and control classes in the pre-and post-test.The analysis revealed that the interpersonal mental health education programme had a positive impact on students’ ability to initiate interactions, appropriate rejection,self-expression,conflict management and emotional support, and was conducive to the enhancement of students’ interpersonal skills. In order to enhance the effectiveness of interpersonal mental health education programmes in improving students’ interpersonal skills, this paper puts forward suggestions for improving the content of interpersonal mental health education programmes, innovating interpersonal mental health education methods, and putting forward safeguards from the school, teacher, student and parent levels.
