In recent years, due to the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic, more and more graduates and laid-off workers have chosen to join the ranks of flexible employment. At present, the number of flexible workers in China exceeds 200 million, which has become an important part of the labor market.Due to their unstable income, household registration restrictions and special occupational risks,it is difficult for flexible workers to participate in employee health insurance, and the demand for commercial health insurance is strong. However, according to the data of China Household Finance Survey over the years, less than 10% of flexible workers have participated in commercial health insurance, reflecting that the health insurance demand of flexible workers in China has not been met.On the one hand, compared with the mature commercial health insurance market abroad, the overall development scale of China’s commercial health insurance is small, and the effective demand of flexible employees for health insurance is difficult to be transformed. On the other hand, there are many forms of flexible employment in China, and there are obvious differences in income levels and education levels,so there is diversified demand for commercial health insurance products. Therefore,it is of great significance for insurance companies to expand the market and improve the participation rate of flexible workers to study the factors affecting their participation in commercial health insurance.Based on the data of China Household Finance Survey in 2019,this thesis constructs a regression model from three perspectives: individual level, family level and social environment level, studies the factors that affect the participation of flexible employees in commercial health insurance, and conducts a heterogeneity analysis according to the classification of employment types to explore the influencing factors when different types of flexible employees participate in insurance. Then, the moderating effect model and the mediating effect model are constructed to explore the internal relationship between the individual influencing factors of flexible employment. The following conclusions are drawn through the robustness test:(1)Individual financial literacy, education level, transportation and communication consumption, child dependency ratio and urban development level have a positive impact on the participation of flexible employees in commercial health insurance, while the old-age dependency ratio has a negative impact on the participation of flexible employees in commercial health insurance;(2)The influencing factors of different types of flexible workers are quite different;(3)The level of education and financial literacy has a moderating effect on the participation of flexible employees in insurance, while the level of financial literacy has a partial mediating effect on the influence of transportation and communication consumption. Finally, based on the empirical conclusions, this thesis puts forward three feasible suggestions:(1)Relevant departments should strengthen financial education to improve the financial literacy of flexible workers;(2)Insurance companies should develop commercial health insurance for different occupational needs;(3)Insurance companies should promote product upgrading and effectively link up with social security. |
