Abstract/Summary:
Since the inception of the new curricular reform, one of the reform priorities in mathematics education has been the development of mathematical modeling skills. In the Mathematics Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education(2022 Edition),it is clearly stated that "one can express the world in the language of mathematics." At the junior high school level, the language of mathematics is mainly expressed in the concept of data, the concept of models, and the sense of application. Therefore,it is necessary to cultivate students’ mathematical modeling ability. In purpose of better cultivating students’ mathematical modeling ability,it is essential to learn the current situation of students’ capability in mathematical modeling.Based on the six-level evaluation model of mathematical modeling ability, this paper investigates the mathematical modeling ability of seventh and eighth grade students in a middle school in Linyi City through survey method and interview method.Firstly, the current situation of students’ mathematical modeling ability was explored through test papers, then the attribution analysis of students’ mathematical modeling ability was conducted through questionnaires and interviews, and finally the factors affecting students’ mathematical modeling ability were summarized based on the above analysis. It was found that the general level of mathematical modeling of junior high school students was poor, and most of them had low level of mathematical modeling ability, most of them were at level 0 and level 1.Meanwhile,the differences in terms of grade level and gender were analyzed, and it was found that there were significant differences in grade level, and the level of mathematical modeling showed an increasing trend with the growth of grade level, but there were no significant differences in gender, among which girls were slightly better than boys. The analysis of mathematical modeling subcompetencies found that students’ reading comprehension, mathematicalization and model construction abilities were poor, which was the main reason why students’ mathematical modeling ability was at a low level, while students’ model solving ability and evaluation reflection ability performed relatively well, but the test results showed that students had difficulty solving models and reflecting. The comprehensive survey found that reading comprehension, mathematization ability and model construction ability are the main factors affecting students’ mathematical modeling ability, and also teachers’ modeling literacy and school evaluation mechanism have an impact on the development of students’ mathematical modeling ability.Based on the above findings, several relevant suggestions are made in cultivating and developing students’ abilities in mathematical modeling.
