Imaginative composition is a type of exercise in which students use their accumulated representations to demonstrate their imagination in written form. The new curriculum and the unified textbook attach great importance to the teaching and learning of imaginative composition, and the middle primary school is the initial stage of formal exposure to imaginative composition.Previous research on the teaching of imaginative composition in the middle primary school has focused on teachers’ instructional strategies for students’ imaginative compositions, and there is a lack of research and analysis on the current teaching situation.Based on previous research findings, this article firstly defines the connotation of imaginative composition teaching, analyses the curriculum basis, teaching content, characteristics and values of the unified middle primary school imaginative composition, and secondly conducts questionnaire surveys on the teaching of imaginative composition to primary school language teachers and students at different levels of schools in order to clarify teachers’ problems in teaching imaginative composition,at the same time,in-depth interviews were conducted with front-line teachers to analyze students’ imaginative compositions, dig deeper into the problems and causes of teaching imaginative compositions, and finally propose corresponding improvement strategies. The study showed that the overall situation of teaching imaginative writing in the middle primary school was good, such as teachers’ comprehensive understanding of the types of imaginative writing;their ability to motivate students to write with encouragement and praise;and their ability to identify students’ writing strengths and common problems for feedback.Students’ learning of imaginative writing is also good, for example, they have a positive attitude towards imaginative writing and are able to use common imaginative methods in their work. However, there are still problems with the teaching of imaginative writing, including: lack of creativity in the content of the imaginative essay;randomness in the imagination;similarity in the content of the essay;lack of language skills;and lack of motivation within the essay. The main problems with teachers teaching imaginative composition include: teachers’ lack of theoretical reserves;problems with teaching methods;and insufficient feedback from teachers. The causes of the problems include: inadequate arrangement of teaching materials;inadequate research and training of teachers;limited knowledge reserves of students;and the influence of utilitarian thinking. Finally, the following strategies are proposed to improve the problems: stimulate students’ interest in imagination and improve their imaginative power;enhance their ability in various ways and consolidate teachers’ theoretical knowledge;optimize teaching methods to promote students’ imaginative generation;improve evaluation standards and innovate evaluation methods.
