Colleges and universities are the gathering places for talents training,which not only need to teach students professional skills,but also need to cultivate students’ teamwork and other skills necessary for working.As an important part of education,physical education can strengthen students’ ability of practice and cooperation,promote the development of students’ physical and mental health and the ability of students to adapt to the external environment.Objectives of the study: Based on the theoretical and practical research of small group teaching at home and abroad,combined with the characteristics of slow pitch softball,this study carried out experimental teaching research on slow pitch softball in colleges and universities,and explored the effects of small group teaching mode on students’ physical quality,skills and tactics and group cohesion,so as to provide ideas and theoretical support for the teaching reform of slow pitch softball in colleges and universities.Research methods: Literature review,questionnaire survey,expert interview,experiment and mathematical statistics were used.Experimental method Class 1(25students)and Class 2(25 students)of grade 2021 slow-pitch softball elective courses in Jilin University were selected as the experimental objects,and the teaching experiment was carried out for eight weeks by using the small group teaching mode and the traditional teaching mode,respectively.Before and after the experiment,the indexes of students’ physical fitness,slow-pitch softball skills and tactics level and team cohesion were tested.The paired sample T test was used to compare the differences of indicators within the group before and after the experiment,and the independent sample T test was used to compare the differences of indicators between the groups before and after the experiment.The application effect of small group teaching model in college slow pitch softball course was discussed.The results were as follows:(1)There was no significant difference in the test results of 50 m running,800 m running,1-minute sit-up and standing long jump between the experimental class and the control class before and after the experiment(P > 0.05).After the experiment,there was no significant difference in the test results of 50 m running,800 m running,1-minute sit-up and standing long jump between the experimental class and the control class(P > 0.05).(2)Before and after the experiment,the 30 s passing and catching test scores of the experimental class and the control class were significantly improved(P < 0.01).After the experiment,the scores of 30 s passing and catching(P <0.01),long throwing(P < 0.05),catching the coach’s stick(P < 0.05)and the level of defensive tactics cooperation(P < 0.05)in the experimental class were better than those in the control class.(3)The scores of group cohesion of the experimental class were significantly improved before and after the experiment(P < 0.05),while the scores of group cohesion of the control class were not significantly changed(P > 0.05).After the experiment,the group cohesion of the experimental class was better than that of the control class(P < 0.05).Conclusions:(1)Neither the eight-week small-group teaching model nor the traditional teaching model could significantly improve the physical fitness of the students.(2)In college slow pitch softball course,the application of small group teaching model and traditional teaching model can effectively improve the skills and tactics of slow pitch softball,and the effect of small group teaching model is better.(3)In college slow pitch softball course,the application of small group teaching model can effectively improve students’ team cohesion.
