| People’s life practices and numerous scientific research results have proved that the growth, success and happiness of individuals depend on the combined results of cognitive and social and emotional competence. It has been found that social and emotional competence can influence students’ cognitive skills to a certain extent and predict their academic performance.Based on this, the study focuses on developing social and emotional competence.Based on the research ideas and processes of pre-preparation,model construction, questionnaire design and implementation, model validation and analysis, and conclusion, the study uses a combination of literature research, interview method, questionnaire survey method, and statistical analysis method, combined with Bronfenbrenner’s ecosystem theory,to explore the factors affecting the development of social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students from the family, school and social environment. The aim is to enrich the research on the social and emotional competence of junior high school students in rural areas and to suggest practical strategies and recommendations for improving students’ social and emotional competence.Firstly, the research results on social and emotional competence at home and abroad were collated and analyzed. The OECD social and emotional competence assessment framework divided social and emotional competence into five dimensions: task competence, emotion regulation competence, collaboration competence, openness competence, and interaction competence.Secondly, using the ecosystem theory as a model to construct a theoretical basis, combined with interviews and literature research, eight factors affecting the development of social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students were proposed in terms of background factors(gender, grade level, family socioeconomic status)and environmental factors(parenting style,teacher-student relationship, peer attachment, school bullying, media use).Research hypotheses were made on the correlations between the influencing factors.A theoretical model of the factors influencing rural junior high school students’ social and emotional competence was initially constructed. Then, based on the theoretical model,a questionnaire on the factors influencing the social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students was developed and distributed to some students in a rural junior high school in L County. Finally, based on the data obtained, the structural equation model was used to analyze the validating factors and test the hypotheses of the social and emotional competence model. The social and emotional competence model of rural junior high school students was finally established through several adjustments and corrections such as correlation path analysis, model fitness test, and mediating effect test. The results of the study show that:(1)No significant gender differences in social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students.(2)There is a significant difference in rural junior high school students’ social and emotional competence regarding grade level, with grade 8 students having significantly lower social and emotional competence than grade 7 and grade 9 students.(3)There is a significant difference in rural junior high school students’ social and emotional competence regarding family socioeconomic status.(4)Social and emotional competence significantly predicted the academic performance of rural junior high school students.(5)Parenting style,teacher-student relationship, peer attachment, school bullying, and media use had significant effects on social and emotional competence, among which, parenting style,teacher-student connection, and peer attachment had substantial positive effects on social and emotional competence, and school bullying and media use had a significant adverse impact on social and emotional competence.(6)There is a mediating chain effect between the influencing factors, which can significantly impact social and emotional competence.Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations are made:Pay attention to social and emotional competence to promote students’ overall development;Strengthen parent-child emotional care to create a harmonious family atmosphere;Improve the teacher-student relationship to enhance teachers’ social and emotional competence;Enrich school community activities to create a unified campus atmosphere;Pay attention to controlling media use to prevent students from becoming addicted to the Internet;Build a collaborative education mechanism to promote win-win education at home and school. The subsequent study will analyze the development mechanism of students’ social and emotional competence in more depth, explore the factors affecting the social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students from multiple angles,in a wide range, and at a deeper level, and seek more scientific, reasonable and practical methods to improve students’ social and emotional competence,to continuously improve the research system on the factors affecting the social and emotional competence of rural junior high school students. |
