Urbanization is the most important social and economic phenomenon in nowadays world. The process of urbanization is not only the agglomeration of population and economy, but also a regional spatial process.Urban space carries all social and economic activities.Urban land expansion is the most direct manifestation of urban land use change, and also a comprehensive reflection of spatial layout and structure in the process of urbanization. In the past decades, with the advancement of global urbanization and the rapid growth of economic development and population, urbanization at regional and global scales has shown unprecedented scale and speed, which not only brings about significant changes in land use patterns, but also brings about significant changes in urban land use expansion.Since China’s reform and opening up,the process of urbanization has been accelerating. As China’s representative cities,Beijing and Shanghai are at the forefront of urbanization in China.Tokyo,Osaka,Japan and Seoul,Korea are also representative cities in Asia. After rapid development, they have entered a stable and mature stage and are at the forefront of the global urbanization process.Geographically,it is similar to China’s geographic conditions, and the national development culture is in harmony with each other. It is of great significance to study and analyze the patterns and laws of urban expansion. This paper analyses the area and population development of five cities in China,Japan and Korea.Through comparative analysis of urbanization process,it is concluded that the growth rates of Tokyo and Osaka are relatively low,the urbanization process has entered a stable period,Seoul’s growth rate is in the middle, and urban development is relatively stable, while Beijing and Shanghai’s growth rate is relatively high, and the urbanization process is in the growth period. Then,by using the distribution characteristics of urban land density,we can characterize and describe the macro-model of urban form and its spatial change, and reveal its urban form and its spatial change law.By using the circle analysis method and the inverse S function of urban land density, this paper analyses the macro-characteristics of urban expansion, and draws the following conclusions: 1)On the urban development model, the five representative cities show centralized development rather than decentralized development;2)In terms of urban morphological characteristics,Beijing and Osaka are the most compact,Shanghai and Tokyo are relatively compact, while Seoul is sprawling.By calculating the degree of urbanization, this paper analyses the micro-characteristics of urban expansion, describes the spatial pattern of the city, depicts the micro-dynamic changes of urban growth, and reveals the local spatial differentiation of urban expansion. From the degree of urbanization and micro-changes,we can draw the following conclusions: 1)Tokyo and Osaka urban research zones have a high proportion of primary and secondary core, and the overall core growth rate is the lowest, indicating that the process of urbanization has entered a stable period;2)Seoul has a long-term balanced development situation, and the city has been steadily expanding and showing a trend of overall outward expansion in form;3)Beijing and Shanghai urban research zones in China are developing rapidly. The urbanization process is in a period of rapid growth.Beijing is rapidly changing from open-land to urban built-up areas, while Shanghai is more transformed into suburban areas. This paper summarizes the corresponding development stages and paths of major cities in China,Japan and Korea, and merges them into relatively compact, compact and sprawling urban development paths. At the same time,by summarizing the above three modes, this paper tries to provide some suggestions for the rapid development of Chinese cities, and gives corresponding development countermeasures for the development of Chinese cities by analyzing the increase of urban built-up areas, the change of spatial attenuation radius and the change of the proportion of urban spatial patterns.
