Since the reform and opening up,our country’s foreign trade has continued to open up,and it has always played a very important role in economic development. However, since the reform and opening up,our country’s trade environment has been constantly changing. With the rise of the anti-globalization wave, the development mode and impact of foreign trade, and other issues have always received extensive attention. And with the development of foreign trade, one of the problems that has gradually emerged is the change in the urban-rural income gap.In many studies, the conclusions on the impact of foreign trade on the urban-rural income gap have not been reached. The conclusions that the development of foreign trade will expand the urban-rural income gap, narrow the urban-rural income gap,and first expand and then narrow the urban-rural income gap have been confirmed. The "9+2" concept of the Pan-Pearl River Delta region was proposed in 2003.The region includes nine provinces and two special administrative regions.Because of the development conditions include resources, labor and policy environment are very sufficient, the development of foreign trade is also very rapid. However, there is a problem.Although the overall foreign trade development of the Pan-Pearl River Delta region is very rapid, its internal development is very different.Due to the huge differences in the level of foreign trade development and economic development between the eastern region headed by Guangdong Province and the central and western regions,it is impossible to generalize the development mode of the Pan-Pearl River Delta region. This paper uses a fixed effect model to explore the impact of foreign trade on the urban-rural income gap,and selects panel data from nine provinces in the Pan-Pearl River Delta region from 1990 to 2019 for research. The results show that:(1)The foreign trade in the Pan-Pearl River Delta has significantly reduced the urban-rural income gap,and export trade has a stronger effect on improving the urban-rural income gap;(2)The impact of foreign trade on the urban-rural income gap in different periods is different,It has shown an expanding trend from 1990 to 2008 and a shrinking trend from 2009 to 2019;(3)The impact of foreign trade in different regions on the urban-rural income gap is different. The development of foreign trade in the central and western regions has significantly expanded the urban-rural income gap, while the eastern region has shown an insignificant narrowing effect.(4)The impact of different trade methods is different.Processing trade has significantly narrowed the urban-rural income gap, while general trade has expanded the urban-rural income gap,and the result is not significant;(5)The development of different trade structures will narrow the urban-rural income gap. However, trade in labor-intensive products has a more obvious effect on improving the urban-rural income gap. Finally, based on the research results, this article puts forward some relevant policy recommendations on how to improve the urban-rural income gap in the Pan-Pearl River Delta.
