At present,the characteristics of VUCA and "black swan" events are increasingly prominent.These major crisis changes in the external environment of enterprises will destroy the business model and survival path that enterprises originally rely on to survive,and make enterprises face the test of life and death.Nevertheless,business model innovation can help enterprises to complete the reconstruction of business model and repair the damage effect caused by the crisis,inducing enterprises can survive and develop in the crisis.Thus,business model innovation has become an important approach for enterprises to deal with the crisis.Organizational inertia,as an inherent attribute of organizations,tends to maintain the original stable operation mode.In this case,in the rapid transformation of organizations in response to crisis changes,it is bound to have a binding effect on the innovation and reform of enterprises.Hence,in the process of business model innovation in response to the crisis,the binding effect of organizational inertia cannot be ignored.This study focuses on the discussion of "how enterprises achieve business model innovation by overcoming organizational inertia in the context of crisis".In this paper,Lin Qingxuan,Cheng Xinnuo and Meizhou Dongpo were selected as three successful cases of enterprises responding to the crisis during the epidemic.With reference to relevant literature and combined with the actual cases,the process of enterprises responding to the crisis was divided into three stages: crisis response,damage repair and rebound realization.Exploiting the exploratory multi-case study,the emerging characteristics of organizational inertia at each stage are identified,the overcoming strategies of organizational inertia at each stage are summarized,and the mechanism of organizational inertia overcoming on business model innovation is explored.The study has the following three conclusions.(i)In different stages of crisis response,organizational inertia affects business model innovation from different types of inertia.Specifically,organizational inertia is dominated by cognitive inertia,structural inertia and behavioral inertia in crisis response stage,damage repair stage and rebound realization stage respectively.(ii)We summarize the strategies to overcome organizational inertia in the process of business model innovation: In the dominant period of cognitive inertia,the strategies are psychological capital release and knowledge acquisition;In the dominant period of structural inertia,the strategies are structural remodeling and supervision and controls.In the dominant period of behavioral inertia,the strategies are process updating,experiential training and employee creation.(iii)Business model innovation presents different characteristics in different stages of enterprises’ response to the crisis,and has undergone the evolution regarding "exploratory business model innovation-expanded business model innovation-deep cultivation business model innovation".(iiii)In each stage,the mechanism of organizational inertia overcoming on business model innovation has undergone the evolution of "activation-empowerment-promotion".Specifically,in the crisis response stage,cognitive habitus activates the decision-making efficiency and action power of business model innovation;In the stage of damage repair,structural inertia enables business model innovation in three aspects: responsiveness,creativity and resource adaptation.In the stage of rebound implementation,behavioral inertia promotes the innovation coupling and extended innovation of business model innovation.
