Manufacturing is not only an important task in national economy, but also the basis of building a nation and strengthening China. It is also an important base to realize high quality economy and society. In the first half of 2020,due to the impact of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the economic development of all countries is in great uncertainty. The digital economy has demonstrated great flexibility in this context. The government work report stressed,‘The pains of economic transition are becoming more acute, and structural problems are obvious...It is essential to promote a range of advanced manufacturing sectors worldwide and to shift Chinese industries up the Global Value Chain(GVC).’ Therefore,in the context of losing the comparative advantage of the manufacturing industry, the rapid development of the digital economy, and the need to enhance the quality of the industry,it is imperative to make full use of the digital economy, promote the fast development of Chinese manufacturing industry, promote the high end of Chinese manufacturing value chain, and realize high quality economy.Based on the above-mentioned background, this article first elaborates the background and meaning of the research on the digital transition of manufacturing industry in global value chain. This paper summarizes the research achievements at home and abroad on the relation between the digital transformation and the global value chain, and makes a deep understanding of the relation between them and their inner relations.Meanwhile, the article also analyses the effect of digital transition on the position of global value chain in manufacturing industry from the angle of digital cost effect, allocation effect, connection effect and assignment effect.Due to the fact that the study of industry digital transition has only recently emerged, there is no uniform measurement method and results for the degree of digital transformation in industry, only a few scholars and organizations have done calculations. This paper, through the research literature, from the three aspects of digital technology transformation, digital innovation capability transformation and digital benefit transformation, the index system of manufacturing digital transformation is constructed, including digital equipment investment, digital talent reserve, research and development intensity, number of valid patents, per capita manufacturing value added, greenhouse gas emissions per unit manufacturing value added, etc. The entropy method is used to calculate the digital transformation index of manufacturing industry.Secondly, this paper also uses the WWZ decomposition model and the GVC participation index based on forward and backward linkages to comprehensively measure the GVC positions of the manufacturing and subdivided industries in the sample countries. In terms of data, this paper selected the data of 38 countries in the world from 1995 to 2018 for analysis, and calculated the degree of digital transformation of manufacturing industry at the national level, the degree of digital transformation of manufacturing industry at various technical levels, the level of forward and backward participation in the global value chain of manufacturing industry at the national level, and the level of backward and forward participation in the global value chain of manufacturing industry at various technical levels. Finally, based on the calculation results of various domestic manufacturing digital transformation index and global value chain position index, this paper tests the hypothesis that the digital transformation of manufacturing industry improves the position of global value chain with empirical research, and verifies the relationship between the digital transformation of manufacturing industry and the position of global value chain at various technological levels, and finds that compared with the low and medium technology manufacturing sector, the higher the digital level of the medium and high-tech manufacturing industry, the better its position in the global value chain is.On the basis of this conclusion, the author also proposes some policy recommendations for China’s manufacturing sector’s digital transition. This study is of great significance for the indepth understanding of the relationship between the digital transformation of manufacturing industry and the position of global value chain, and also provides theoretical support for the future digital transformation of manufacturing industry.
