An Empirical Study On The Impact Of Digital Transformation Of Advanced Manufacturing On Participation In Global Value Chains

In recent years,the wave of manufacturing digitization is spreading rapidly in all countries.Advanced manufacturing industry is the key field of manufacturing industry.Accelerating the digital transformation of advanced manufacturing and enabling advanced manufacturing with digitalization is conducive to better integration into the Global Value Chains(GVC),and achieving a high level of opening-up and highquality development.Using data from 1995 to 2018 for seven advanced manufacturing sectors in 64 countries,this paper firstly analyzes the digital transformation of advanced manufacturing industry and its participation in GVC,and then studies the effect of digital transformation of advanced manufacturing industry on its participation in GVC by using multidimensional fixed effects model.The findings are as follows:(?)During the study period,the proportion of the world information industry in global GDP showed an N-shaped development trend;The average level of digital transformation in advanced manufacturing and GVC participation in representative countries have both increased significantly,but there is heterogeneity across countries.(II)The baseline regression results show that digital transformation of advanced manufacturing can significantly promote their participation in GVC,and the effect on participation in backward GVC is significantly greater than that of participation in forward GVC,and this conclusion is still valid after multiple robustness tests.(III)Heterogeneity test shows that digital transformation of advanced manufacturing industry has more positive effect on complex GVC than simple GVC;the promoting effect of digital transformation of advanced manufacturing on participation in forward GVC is positively correlated with national economic development level,and the promoting effect on participation in backward GVC is in order of moderately developed countries,highly developed countries and developing countries;the positive effect of digital services in advanced manufacturing industry is significantly greater than that of digital products.(IV)The results of the mediation test shows that digital transformation of advanced manufacturing industry promotes its participation in GVC by reducing trade costs and improving total factor productivity.(V)The further study found that the digital transformation of advanced manufacturing industry has a negative effect on its GVC position,and will significantly reduce its domestic value added rate,and the lower the national development level,the stronger the negative effect,but the difference is that the digital transformation of China’s advanced manufacturing industry can significantly improve its domestic added value rate.
