In recent years,China’s economy has entered into a new phase, and market competition has intensified. In order to keep up with the rapid development of the market, enterprises need to strengthen their basic competitiveness. The development of agriculture plays a crucial role in promoting China’s economy, and agricultural enterprises are key players in modern agriculture. However,in order to thrive in the fierce market competition, agricultural enterprises must constantly improve their innovation capabilities.Unfortunately, due to the high risk and investment involved in innovation, coupled with the relatively weak innovation ability of agricultural enterprises, the overall innovation performance of agricultural enterprises in China is still quite low. Therefore, evaluating the innovation performance of agricultural listed enterprises is crucial in helping these enterprises to scientifically assess their own innovation status and ability, strengthen their innovation awareness, and stimulate their innovation power. This evaluation can also provide theoretical support for improving the innovation ability of agricultural enterprises, enabling them to adopt effective strategies and ultimately improve their comprehensive competitiveness from all aspects. Therefore, this study is a significant step towards reasonably evaluating the innovation performance of agricultural enterprises in China and promoting their innovation and development. To bolster the innovation capacity and core competitiveness of China’s agricultural enterprises, this study examines a representative sample of China’s agricultural listed companies, providing a comprehensive analysis of the distinctive features of agricultural enterprises in different regions of China.Through scientific data collection, this research utilizes a three-stage DEA model and Malmquist index model for empirical analysis, revealing that(1)agricultural enterprises in the eastern region exhibit significantly higher levels of innovation and overall development compared to those in the central and western regions;(2)the innovation capacity of agricultural enterprises in the northeast region is relatively weak. These findings provide valuable insights for policymakers and agricultural enterprises to enhance their innovation capacity and core competitiveness.Additionally, the low level of enterprise innovation performance is primarily due to inefficient management, resulting in suboptimal resource utilization.Notably, the scale of enterprises constitutes an important factor limiting the innovation efficiency of agricultural enterprises.Furthermore, the relatively slow research and development progress of agricultural enterprises, coupled with development opportunities and scarcity of related resources, contributes to the low innovation performance level of some agricultural enterprises in China.Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed:(1)Government:Rationalize innovative investment planning;Scrutinize the policy of subsidies to agricultural enterprises;Enhance the cultivation of innovative talent in agricultural enterprises;Strengthen support for agricultural scientific and technological equipment.(2)Enterprise:Attract and train high-quality talents in scientific and technological and management fields;Strategically plan and utilize various innovative resources;Identify regional advantages and establish distinctive industries.
