After eight years of negotiations, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership(RCEP)officially entered into force on January1,2022,marking the formal establishment of the world’s largest free trade area. With the continuous reduction of traditional tariffs and people’s increasing attention to environmental protection, the signing of the RCEP makes the role of green trade barriers become more prominent.Green trade barriers have the characteristics of legality and concealment, which can help importing countries not violate WTO regulations but effectively protect their own market. Therefore, more and more countries raise the green threshold of imported products. At the same time, the export of mechanical and electrical products is the worst hit by green trade barriers for the importing countries’ consideration of environmental protection and animal and plant life safety. The members of the RCEP include not only China’s largest trading partner(ASEAN),but also important export markets for China’s mechanical and electrical products(Japan and the ROK).Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the green trade barriers faced by RCEP member countries to guide China’s export of mechanical and electrical products to take the road of green and sustainable development. In the part of theoretical analysis, firstly, related theories of green trade barrier are sorted out,and the connotation, characteristics and economic effects of green trade barrier are analyzed. Then it studies the current situation of the trade scale of China’s electromechanical products export RCEP countries and the green trade barriers encountered. In the empirical research part,an extended trade gravity model is constructed, and data from 2000 to 2021 is selected to analyze the impact of green trade barriers on China’s mechanical and electrical products export to RCEP member countries. Then,it explores the effect of green trade barriers on China’s mechanical and electrical exports from product category, development level of member states and geographical region. The main research results show that: Green trade barriers play a significant role in impeding the export of mechanical and electrical products to RCEP countries, but at the same time, they also play a role in improving the quality of China’s mechanical and electrical products. With the passage of time, the inhibitory effect of green trade barriers will be weakened. The per capita GDP of China and RCEP member countries positively promotes the export of China’s mechanical and electrical products, while the trade distance and population of RCEP member countries negatively hinder the export of China’s mechanical and electrical products.Green trade barriers have a significant inhibitory effect on both labor-intensive and technologyintensive mechanical and electrical products, but have a stronger inhibitory effect on technology-intensive mechanical and electrical products.China’s export of mechanical and electrical products is more significantly affected by green trade barriers of developed countries and Oceanian countries in RCEP member countries. Finally, according to the conclusion of this paper, suggestions are put forward from the three levels of government, industry and enterprise,in order to effectively deal with the green trade barriers faced by China’s mechanical and electrical products export trade.
