After magnesium and aluminum are made into small dusts, they could burn and explode easily under some conditions. So it is necessary for us to master the rule of magnesium and aluminum dust explosion. Accordingly, we can control and prevent accidents. The characteristics of dust explosion of magnesium dust, aluminum dust and their alloy and their mixture are studied experimentally by using a 1.3 liter Hartemanm duct in this paper. The main work and conclusions are as follows:(1) An experimental system consisting of raising, control, ignition, testing and data acquisition system is optimized. Some characteristic parameters, under different initial pressures, the maximum explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise ect, can be tested by using the experiment system.(2) The characteristics of dust explosion of magnesium and aluminum dust are studied experimentally by using this experimental system. Experiment results demonstrate that the characteristics of dust explosion of magnesium dust and aluminum dust are similar. But the magnesium dust is more fierce than aluminum dust. The effects of ignition delay on the maximum explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise are very noticeable;and decreasing partical size leads to increase the maximum explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise;and exists a optimum concentration that makes the maximum explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise reach a maximum;increasing initial pressure leads to increase the maximum explosion pressure and maximum rate of pressure rise in direct proportion, and the optimum concentration that make the maximum explosion pressure increases accordingly;to the same concentration, the smaller the dust is, the sooner it explodes.(3) The characteristics of dust explosion of magnesium and aluminum alloy and their mixture are studied experimentally by using this experimental system. Both of them are similar to the pure dust in the course of explosion. The alloy reacts more quickly and fiercely than the mixture. The more the content of magnesium in the alloy is, the less steady it is. The character of the mixture is close to the magnesium dust's when the content of the magnesium is increased.The new ideas presented in this paper are as follows:(1) Firstly, the initial pressure is changed and the effects which are made by initial pressure on explosion pressure and the rate of pressure rise are gained.(2) Secondly, the explosion characters between the magnesium and aluminum alloy and their mixture are researched and compared.
