Essential Hypertension (EH) is the most common cardiovascular disease nowadays. It’s main symptom is persistent increase of arterial pressure in systemic circulation, and it is a complex disease which is a combined effect of many factors, such as:polygenic inheritance, multi-environmental elements, and so on.Most EH patients show their symptoms gradually. At the early stage, most patients do not have very obvious symptoms, but there are few patients showing some indications such as:headache, dizziness, tinnitus, palpitations, vertigo, inability to concentrate, memory loss, numbness in hands and feet, fatigue, irritability etc. Those symptoms are caused by dysfunction of the advanced nervous system and not consistent with the increase of blood pressure. In late stage, blood pressure keep in high level and organs (ex:Brain, heart, kidney) are damaged. In recent years, antihypertensive drugs (ADs) have developed rapidly. Nowadays, common ADs can be classified into five categories:Calcium Antagonists, Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors (ACEI), Angiotensin Ⅱ receptor antagonists (ARB), Diuretics,β receptor blockers and the compound preparat ions with fixed ratios of above drugs. In addition, a receptor blockers and other types of drugs also be used to some specific EH patients. In clinical, West Medicine relays on drugs, it has unavoidable defects such as:long treatment time, not-so-good efficiency, poor medication compliance, obvious side-effect, high cost and so on. Therefore, finding a safe, effective prevention and control measure is still an important research focused by the medical community.Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) bases on the dialectic and systematic ideology, emphasizes people-oriented measure, focuses on customized treatment, and has advantages of multi-target effects. Through different measures, such as:TCM drugs and acupuncture moxibustion, treat with different etiology and pathogenesis, TCM has gotten encouraging results. And then, has aroused widespread concern in the society.Pricking and spilled blood therapy (PSB) is one traditional therapy in TCM. It comes from the TCM systematic option, makes use of these connections of meridians in human’s whole body to smooth the channels in body. Though meridian conditioning and blood-qi regulating, it makes our body to achieve a balance between Yi and Yang, qi and blood, inside and outside of body. And has perfect effects to EH patients. This paper has been divided into two parts:Literature Review and Clinical Research. Two sections are in Literature Review:1. Modern medical research status of essential hypertension.2. Research of Chinese medicine treatment for essential hypertension. In the Clinical Research:Target:Discuss effects of pricking and spilled blood therapy with different blood amounts in EH clinical treatments and compare randomly these effects with a control group which used oral drugs (Niu-Huang-Jiang-Ya pill) instead of PSB; evaluate clinical efficacy and make a contribution to complement clinical EH treatments.Method:Randomly grouped97EH patients (mild to moderate) into three groups: PSB1(high spilled blood amount), PSB2(low spilled blood amount), control group (use drugs). We observed blood pressure changes before and after the treatments, detected and recorded side-effects of these therapies. At last we analysis the result with statistical tools. Results:Three groups have no significant statistical difference (P>0.05) in the following indexes:age, sex, weight, course of disease, pre-treatment systolic blood pressure and pre-treatment diastolic blood pressure, pre-treatment total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol distribution. Therefore, they are comparable. Markedly effective rate of PSB1is66.67%, PSB2is45.16%; control group is38.71%. After pairwise comparing, we got the following results:PSB1and PSB2are different in effects (P<0.05); PSB1and control group have difference (P<0.05); PSB2and control group do not have difference (P>0.05). After analysis, PSB1and PSB2are not different in the change of diastolic blood pressure before and after treatment, while both of them have difference with control group. On the other hand, systolic blood pressure before and after treatment in all groups exist significant difference. PSB groups have effects on TC, TG, LDL-C of patients; control group cannot change level of these indexes. All the three methods could improve TCM symptoms of EH, but PSB is better than drug therapy (P<0.05).Conclusion: Pricking and spilled blood therapy is effective to treat EH patients, and the spilled blood amount affects the efficacy. PSB therapy is worth to study thoroughly and promote generally.
