Written in December 1926,George Gershwin's "Prelude" was a representative work featured by maturity. This set of works originally contained five preludes, but only three remained in the world due to the loss of the score. The composer combined U.S.'s jazz music with classical music creating a secular, humorous, and straightforward style in his own work. This was a rare creation in the serious music in the U.S..These works are charming and refreshing. Each prelude is full of dramatic contrast, clear structure, strange melody and is deeply loved by the audience. The performing technique is relatively novel which requires performers to be equipped with rich imagination and expressiveness in order to show the unique rhythm and changeable sound effects. This paper introduces the creation background of the three preludes.Taking the style characteristics of the music as the starting point, the paper explores the rhythm characteristics in detail.Besides, the paper analyzes timbre changes,long-span playing techniques, the performance of stress and the use of pedals. The purpose of this paper is to find a more practical interpretation method that conforms to the style of the work hoping that the player can get some inspiration from it.
