| Green design has become the main method to improve the environmental performances of products, and the research on the theory and methodology related with green design has already become one of the main topics in the product design field since middle 1990s', and is still in the ascendant. The green characteristics of products are embodied throughout the entire product life cycle, therefore, the answers to those questions which covering how to describe the green characteristics of products, how to assess green products and how to improve the environmental friendliness of products etc., have to depend on the assessment of products. Hence, the assessment of green products has become one of the problems that must be solved when implement green design.Based on the analysis of current product assessments, this paper puts systematically forward the theory and method of green product assessment based on fuzzy-matter element, together with the idea of product life cycle and the characteristics of green products. The emphasis is put on the deep and systematical study of the green product assessment theory and method as well as the development of the assessment support tool. The main research of this paper includes:(1) Deeply discuss the meaning of green products. Based on the summary of various definitions of green products, this paper deeply and systematically discuss the meaning of green products, analyzes the recognition process and method of green products, and discusses the green characteristics of different products such as household appliances and electronic appliances etc.(2) Establish a three-dimensional matrix structure and an integrated assessment system model based on the entire product life cycle. According to the characteristics of green product life cycle, this paper proposes a three-dimensional matrix structure for green product assessment. Based on this structure, this paper also analyzes the objectives and contents of the assessment, and establishes a system model for green product assessment.(3 ) Establish the different levels assessment index system. This paper proposes a systematical, dynamic and rather scientific and reasonable index system for green product assessment which meet the different assessment needs, based on the analysis of various index systems advanced by many other researchers from different angles, as well as with the author's own investigation and analysis. Apart from that, this paper also puts forward the mechanism and method of establishing the standard of green product assessment for our country.(4)Establish the fuzzy matter element assessment model of green products with multi-index performance parameters of products. According to the characteristics of green products and the structure of assessment index system, the author introduces the analysis method of fuzzy matter element into green product assessment in a creative way. This method introduced in this paper not only solves many problems that can not be solved by fuzzy mathematics and classical mathematics, but also makes the assessment results more objective and accurate. Besides, it canexpress the assessment results with quantitative values; therefore it can show the level of the product integrated performance indexes more completely, which improves the assessment's support effects on the design process. According to the multilevel and multistage assessment index system of green products, the author puts forward the improved fuzzy-AHP method to decide different level weights of green product assessment indexes, which enhances the objectivity of the weights and then improves the creditability of the assessment results.(5 ) Establish the mapping relation model of assessment results and green design.
