Over a long period, the conservation and reuse of architectures has been focused on the gains and losses in historical culture or economy, neglecting the ecological significance. This thesis presents an extensive study from a wider macroscopic angle of view of ecological outlook, historical cultural outlook, legal outlook and economic values involved in the reuse of existing architectures on the important significance of adaptive reuse to sustainable development in terms of reducing energy consumption, lessening environmental pollution, inheritance of historical culture and economic value. The thesis points out, through an analysis of the realities of China, the important macroscopic significance of adaptive reuse to the sustainable development of China's architectural industry under the severe situation of the environment, proposes principles to be observed in the practices of reuse and puts forward suggestions on the laws and regulations necessary for the establishment of macroscopic adjustment and control mechanism in consideration to the realities of China.
