A Study On The History, Form And Conservation Of Historic Town In Hubei

This paper comes from the cooperative project studied by Wuhan University of Technology and Kanagawa University of Japan: "China-Japan's Cooperative Study on Historic Town in Hubei Province" and "the Study on Conservation Mode and Method of Historic Town in Hubei" launched by Wuhan University of Technology. In the same breath this case study is a part of the project "The Study on Traditional House in Hubei" of the Construction Department of Hubei province. Taking historic town, street and building as carriers, the paper explores the values of the history, culture, politics and economy from historic town in Hubei. Moreover, the paper analyzes space configuration of historic town and regional feature of historic building. Finally, concerning status in quo in historic town, the conceiving outline of conservation and development has been put forward in order to promote sustainable development of town culture. There are ten chapters in this paper.In chapter 1, the paper introduces the purpose and significance of the study. And by outlining status in quo and the trends of the study on historic town, the paper confirms the object, content, synopsis, and methods of the study.In chapter 2, the paper briefly narrates the developmental background of historic town in Hubei, including nature, economy, culture and technology.In chapter 3, the gradual process of towns in Hubei booming from bazaar has been revealed. Based on it, the paper identifies the developing stages of historic town, and analyzes the status and characteristic of each stage.In chapter 4, the paper mainly discusses the system, function, and type of historic town in Hubei.In chapter 5, by investigating elements of spatial conformation, the paper analyses the site and layout of historic town, and concludes the mode of spatial conformation, then confirms the process and fashion of spatial conformation development.In chapter 6, the paper discusses the features of streets. Through analyzing the function and the size of the interface of street one by one, the paper illuminates that such structures are adaptive for residence.In chapter 7, according to the function and space layout, the paper classifies building in historic town. Further more, the paper stresses on the effect of climate and commercial development on the historic building. Especially, some attentions are paid to some regional features of historic building in Hubei, such as Tianjing and Tiandou.In chapter 8, the paper summarizes the culture characters of historic town in Hubei, and dissertate its value and inspiration.In chapter 9, the paper proposes some conceiving thoughts for the conservation and utilization for historic town in Hubei. Investigation questionnaire has been adopted to analyze the status in quo questions and difficulties, and then concrete ideas and measures have been brought forth.In chapter 10, the paper draws a conclusion on the study and prospects the future of Hubei town. Finally, some thoughts and hints are provided for future research on Hubei.
