This topic come from the cooperative project studied by Wuhan University of Technology and Kanagawa University of Japan: "China-Japan's Cooperative Study on the Streets of Ancient Town in Hubei Province" and "The Study on Conservation and Utilization's Mode and Method of Ancient Town in Hubei Province" published by Wuhan University of Technology, in the same breath this case study is a part of the project "The Study on Traditional Residence in Hubei Province" of the Construction Department of Hubei province, this case is the study of the ancient towns in Hubei province.As the analysis case studies of ancient town, this thesis based on the studies of the ancient town in Hubei province, Qujiawan town which has the history of more than 500 years, from the aspect of architecture history and urban design, combining with geography, sociology and the knowledge of other several subjects, we try to go deep into the mysteries of the ancient town. Here we mainly use three means: investigation, survey analysis and comparison analysis, start with the studies of the current situation of Qujiawan town and interrelated historical materials, discover the development principle and evolvement principle of ancient town, explore the features and connotation of the ancient streets of Qujiawan town, then and more master the fashion of traditional inhabitation a region in Hubei, unearth the history and cultural connotation of ancient town, and carry forward the feature of region tradition, history and culture, then bring forward the most suitable blue print of conservation and utilization of ancient town.Qujiawan town come into being in 1496,it's one of the most important revolution bases in the period of the first revolutionary civil war. As the Institution of State Protected cultural relic, the ancient town still hold the sites(about 39) of Western Hunan and Western Hubei Revolutionary Base Area, and the ancient streets of Qujiawan town still remains the relatively full style and features.Qujiawan town developed from a small village into a well-known market town, it's form and development can be concluded as "got his beginning by familybreed and prosperity by trade, the development of agriculture, commerce and handicraft industry and the family breed of Qujiawan, all of these have close relationship with the development and evolvement of ancient town. The space pattern of ancient town is influenced by people's oneself needs and natural environments, at one time it's limited by three factors such as politics, economy, culture, technology and so on, "To locate towns in river bends "as the location of town, "one street and several Lanes" as the structure of ancient town, "10% of the town is river, 10% is housing and 80% is paddy field" as the pattern of ancient town are shaped little by little. The streets of ancient town formed the pattern of ancient town as "streets go alone with river, houses are built facing the streets", it also has the function of commerce and inhabitancy which urges to form the space of streets which is small but delightful, and suitable for communication. Qujiawan town saves more than 50 traditional folk houses which are mainly consisted of gray tiles, slope roofs, white walls and half timber construction, most of these were built at the end of the Qing Dynasty. The state had started to appropriate funds in order to protect and maintain them since 1980s. The houses are maintained well, and are rare historical and cultural heritage.The paper is composed of seven chapters. The first chapter is introduction. The content from the second chapter to the sixth one is the main body of the paper. It discusses the development of the historical process of the street, the organization of the town's space, the features of the public space (street and route), the type and features of the building on the street. Finally, the paper presents the conception for the protection and usage of the street such as " To protect historical style and features, to resume commercial function, and to rebirth the old streets".
