Theoretical Studies On Virtual Construction And Its Operation

There are many construction projects in the early twenty years of the new century in China. These new projects need new construction methods, which have not been used or tested previously.Virtual construction (VC) is not only a new construction method, but also a new kind of organizational model. The application of VC in the construction processes can support construction management and control.Based on the analysis of theories and practice within and across China, the paper tries to use integration means to make deep research on the theory of VC. The main contents are described as follows:1. The concept and definition of VC are firstly studied. Virtual construction is an integrated concept, it has two meanings: one is technology, and the other is management. The description model of VC is also presented in the same chapter.2. The operation of VC is systematically described and the key factors of VC-organization are in depth discussed. Based on the basic theory, the mode of quality management is designed. Then the basement of VC is studied. In the end of this chapter, the technical system framework of VC is established.3. Partner selection based on core competence is a key to the success of VC operation. The essential issue of the problem is studied. The core competence of the main contractor and an approach of VC partner selection are put forward.4. Information management is very important to VC. From the operation of VC, T-VC, M-VC, the requirements of information management are brought forward. Information shared and integration is the key. An approach to the information integration is purposed.
