Research On The Predicament And Strategies In Conservation Of Historic Towns And Villages In The Pearl River Delta

Historic towns and villages is an important component of our historical and cultural heritage. It is not only the Guangdong people's civilization and wisdom but also the witness of historical development of the Lingnan area.With the rapid urbanization of Guangdong province, especially in the Pearl River Delta, a large number of ancient villages and towns with historical and cultural value are facing a short-term transformation and destruction. The conservation problem is very serious, so it is the time to present the protection measures.The thesis studies the protection course over the past three decades of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta. Through the analysis of architecture, economics, sociology, management, it exploits the protection history of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta. It studies the behavior and motives of social groups in the protection of historic towns and villages in order to reveal the mechanism of protection. It discusses the problems and underlying causes of the physical space, socio-economic, protection system, conservation planning and cultural tourism of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta. It puts forward the sustainable countermeasures of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta on the basis of geographical and cultural characteristics of Lingnan by learning from the advanced protection system for the historic towns and villages in the West .According to the research frame work, the thesis focuses on the following three aspects:(1)Though studying the historical development and social change of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta, it summarizes its main features of the social structure, economic development and human landscape, groups into six types, presents the three-phase process in the protection history and analyzes the situation and protect mechanism. The six types of historic towns and villages include traditional farming type, foreign overseas type, architectural heritage type, revolution type, trade and traffic type and celebrity type.(2)It analyzes the key factors of conservation of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta and explores the five existing problems in the couse such as the physical space to survive, social and economic development, building a protection system, establishment of conservation planning as well as the development of cultural tourism. These problems are very complex. It discusses the key problems and underlying causes by many related theories.(3)In order to better protect the cultural heritage of Lingnan area, it puts forward the macro-sysem strategies, micro-technical strategies and implementation strategies on the basis of multi-disciplinary theories by learning from the advanced protection strategy in the West. Finally it build a multi-disciplinary system of protection strategies of historic towns and villages . System strategies include legal system strategy of a sound and clear property rights and protection system; administration system of the establishment of regulatory mechanisms and the cultural administration evaluation system; financial security system of a diversified fund-raising channels and operation. It also presents a scientific pattern in technical process of conservation planning and public participation model. Implementation strategies includes integrating urban and rural areas and updating organic strategy; taking a dynamic and coordinated development strategy and establishing the cultural industry cluster.The thesis studies the conflict between protection and development of historic towns and villages in the Pearl River Delta and puts forward the protection strategies. It emphasizes that the protection system is an important guarantee to improve the protection movement of historic towns and villages.
