The traditional villages, which are widely distributed in the Pearl River Delta region, are not only the important carrier of regional culture, but also the necessary component of regional coordination. The research on the protection and sustainable development of traditional villages is not only the key field of China’s cultural heritage research, but also the important content of exploring the organic integration of Cultural Heritage Protection and urban and rural development. The Pearl River Delta is an economic developed area in Guangdong and even in the whole country. However, the protection and development of traditional villages are in great contradiction. With the development of regional integration, the changes of culture, economy, society and Ecology in the Pearl River Delta are speeding up,which strongly affect the traditional villages and make the environment more complex and changeable, the protection and development of traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta need to be comprehensively examined. In this paper, the protection and development of traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta will be studied systematically from the perspective of multi-scale,multi-dimension and multi-time,in order to make an effective response to the sustainable development of traditional villages in the future, for example, how to deal with the relationship between the protection of traditional villages and the development of social economy, how to stimulate the endogenous motive force of traditional villages, how to deal with the relationship between the protection of traditional villages and the development of social economy in the construction of Guangdong-hong Kong-macao Bay area, how to stimulate the endogenous motive force of traditional villages, how to deal with the relationship between the protection of traditional villages and the development of social economy, how to deal with the relationship between the protection of traditional villages and the development of social economy It will be the key point to promote regional coordination and achieve high-quality development of social economy, and what kind of protection and development mode is more suitable for the sustainable development of traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta.Based on the theory of sustainable development, this paper analyzes the evolution of the traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta, systematically summarizes the protection and development of the traditional villages, and explores the logical relationship between the protection and development of the traditional villages, construction of evaluation system for sustainable development of traditional villages in Pearl River Delta. On the basis of the above work, combined with extensive and in-depth field research and using field and social survey methods, historical and current information data on population, social economy, land resources, village buildings(traditional and modern),village facilities, etc.are obtained, quantitative analysis of sustainable development level, with the help of system clustering, divide the types of villages, reveal the spatial distribution pattern, analyze its formation and evolution of the driving forces.Further analysis of the causes of development difficulties,to explore sustainable development models and strategies.Through the research, the following achievements have been achieved:1)In response to the changes of the times and the differences of social development, the traditional villages have undergone the phased changes of“Natural evolution-rapid transformation-internal conflict appearance”,and formed the development tendency of taking economic interests as the guidance. In order to alleviate the conflict of interest in the protection and development of traditional villages, the traditional village protection mainly focuses on the static preservation of the architectural heritage supported by the government, which shows the trend of protection being marginalized and solidified, traditional village protection has become an“Isolated island”outside the regional social and economic development.2)Based on the sustainable development goal of traditional villages, this paper constructs an evaluation index system of sustainable development of traditional villages in Pearl River Delta with 24 factors and 4 dimensions, and quantifies the diachronic changes of traditional village factors and their interactions, reflect the traditional village protection system environment, concept cognition, social and economic development.Furthermore,by establishing a comprehensive evaluation method of single-dimension total quantity superposition and multi-dimension contrast, the Cronbach’s alpha test index reliability was used to revise and perfect the index system.3)Through the quantitative evaluation and cluster analysis of the research samples, the results show that the traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta can be divided into four types: Integrated Conservation,over-protection,extensive development and retrogressive shrinkage, the integrated conservation type with high comprehensive level accounts for 20.97% of the total. The latter three types of traditional villages have relatively concentrated problems of unsustainable development, and their characteristics are obviously different.Furthermore, through the Comparative Analysis and Correlation Analysis of 12 attribute factors, the mechanism of the difference formation and distribution of sustainable development is revealed. It is mainly shown that various types of traditional villages are affected by the regional urbanization and industrialization,as well as the differences in the development of regional tourism economy, the spatial distribution shows a layer-by-layer change from the inner to the outer circle,in which the decreasing and retrogressive shrinking of integrated conservation are prominent.4)According to the analysis of the protection driving force,it is found that the external driving force is prominent and the internal driving force is weak, which reveals that the traditional village protection and development is mainly a response to the macro-policy.The policy of integrated factor management and distribution of protection power reveals that traditional village protection is separated from regional social and economic development by the restriction of economic shortsightedness or neglect of social benefits,it is the main factor that leads to over-reliance on top-down single factor control and village independent protection, which results in the unsustainable development of traditional villages.5)In view of the protection dilemma, the study will bring the protection of traditional villages into the scope of regional social and economic development, based on the cultural homology of the Pearl River Delta and the advantages of regional integration,it is a feasible way for the sustainable development of traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta to activate the linkage of protection and development by the combination of traditional village heritage value and characteristic industries.Based on the above cognition,a model of “System linkage governance”is established, which is driven by“Endogenous kinetic energy of village system”and supported by“Regional system co-growth”and “Multi-factor integration optimization”,the optimization strategy is put forward from the perspective of “Dynamic optimization-regional overall planning-factor management and control ”.Through promoting the interaction between protection and social and economic development, the paper tries to improve the linkage of the “ Person-village-property ”system in promoting the development of traditional village heritage and characteristic industries, and takes it as a fulcrum, establish the interaction between the protection of traditional villages and the integration of urban and rural development, and then form a long-term mechanism for the sustainable development of traditional villages. To sum up,on the basis of systematically studying the protection and development of traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta, this paper puts forward a sustainable development model suitable for the traditional villages in the Pearl River Delta by introducing the theory of sustainable development, for the high-speed economic development of the traditional village protection and development of the idea to do some new exploration.
