In this dissertation, the Mongolian novellas in the urbanization trend were studied through analyzing social and cultural backgrounds of them to address how Mongolian authors imagine and reflect a city and their attitude toward a city. Based on the actual condition of urban novellas, efforts have been made to demonstrate the developmental trajectory and characteristics of Mongolian urban novellas in the new period through studying representative texts. This dissertation includes introduction, the main parts (chapter 1 to chapter 4), and the conclusion.In the introduction, the previous works were reviewed, and the significance, aim, and the methods of this study were introduced. In the Chapter 1, the occurrence and development of city and the history of town and city in Mongolian area were briefly discussed, the concept of urban literature was explicated, and the relationship between city and literature, and the social and cultural background of Mongolian urban novellas have been investigated. In the Chapter 2, the urban imagination in Mongolian novellas has been classified to urban imagination from the viewpoint of traditional culture and urban imagination based on urban experience. The textual analyses show that the most authors observe cities from the viewpoint of traditional culture and a countryman, show their dislike or opposition to cities through imagining cities as a conflict with nomadic culture or destruction to cultural customs. In the texts reflecting real life based on urban experience, the social issues accompanying China’s reform and opening-up were concerned, and the topics of daily life, love and family were also presented. In the Chapter 3, according to the social status and occupation, the figures depicted in the Mongolian novellas in the urbanization trend were classified to intellectuals, migrant workers, businessmen, officials, and vagrants, and the characteristics of each class of figure were discussed in detail. In the Chapter 4, the change of aesthetic consciousness and the secularization tendency of aesthetic in Mongolian urban novellas were mainly discussed. With the development of cities and changes in social culture and lifestyle, there are some changes with modern features in aesthetic consciousness and evident secularization tendency in aesthetics in Mongolian urban novellas.
