Since the birth of modern Chinese society, early Chinese film, movie sets and stage design have contributed to the development of China’s national film aesthetic, the exploration of traditional space and the national spirit of inheritance and reproduction. This paper focuses on the years 1905-1949, as this time period allows for an objective view of historical changes, the study of unique depiction of the China’s experience and the increased importance of the role of film and film promotion as a form of cultural representation in early modern China.Four chapters, the first chapter studies the development of the film sets in early Chinese film, the comprehension of relevant information and mastery of creative ideas during this period, delineating three unique stages of technical development of early films. The second chapter studies "scenery landscape" of early films, based on traditional Chinese aesthetics, space, and culture theory, showing how early films integrate concepts of space in terms of traditional ideographic functions of four kinds:poetry, painting, garden drama and spatial aesthetics. The third chapter researches Western film theory, film narrative metaphor theory, psychoanalysis and the interpretation of semiotics, connecting the the concepts and functions of film sets, film space with film narrative. Chapter four concludes with a study of external factors which influenced early Chinese films, the aesthetics of western film space and visual metaphor, the subsequent influence upon social ideology, audience appeal and nationalization.
