High technology industry is the leading and strategic industry of the national economy; it is the decisive factor in measuring regional development potential and core competitiveness. The global financial crisis slowed down the world economic development, triggered the information industry downturn, and lead to the unprecedented bottlenecks of high technology industry. Therefore, how to adjust the high technology industry structure and stimulate its development gradually attracts government and academia’s attention. Scholars has conducted a lot of researches which were mainly concentrated in the influencing factors, development model, the competitive power of high technology industry and high technology industry’s influence on economic growth and the traditional industry. However, in an increasingly fierce international competition, researches on how to optimize the industrial structure and promote the development of high technology industry is also necessary and urgent.Yangtze River Delta Region is the most economically developed area in China, which is characteristic of export-oriented economy and the leading area in the national reform and opening up as well as regional integration process. Reform and opening up, economic globalization and regional integration deeply influenced the development of high technology industry in the Yangtze River delta. High-tech industrial structure also changes accordingly and shows unique regional characteristics. It’s necessary to investigate the structural optimization of high technology industry at the Yangtze River delta on the basis of industrial structure optimization theory. At the same time, the systemic analysis on the development process and structure feature of high-tech industry in Yangtze River Delta as well as the strategy study of structure optimization are crucial for transforming and upgrading the innovative development of Yangtze River Delta region and deepening the reform in China. Relying on the advanced technology, professional talents, abundant financial funds, efficient management and the international cooperation, Yangtze River Delta achieves a rapid development and has a large economic scale and a great development potential. However, under the background of the global financial crisis, some structural problems appeared in the development process of the high-tech industry in Yangtze River Delta. Many regions in China chose to encourage high-tech industry as the new economic growth point based on innovation support and the optimization and updating of the economic structure. Therefore, it is important to study the development status, the structure features and the performance evaluation of regional high-tech industry, as well as how to precede the optimization and updating of the high-tech industry under the background of economic globalization, regional integration and system innovation.The study on the structure optimization of high-tech industry in Yangtze River Delta can also provide the experience reference and theoretical basis for the structure adjustment and development of high-tech industry in other developing regions.This article contains seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction of this study, which states the backgrounds, purposes, definition of basic concepts, methods and technical routes of this study.In the second chapter, relevant theoretical basis and reviews of pasted studies are provided. This chapter summarizes the industrial structure optimization theories and tries to analyze the connotation of hi-tech ndustrial structure optimization, which established the theoretical and methodological foundation for this study.The third chapter is the analysis of hi-tech industrial developmental situation and structure. Based on the summary on the process and features of the hi-tech industries’development, the spatial and internal structure of hi-tech industry in Yangtze river delta were analyzed from the aspects of both industry and enterprises. Meanwhile, the problems that may exist on the industrial structure were also discussed.The fourth chapter is on hi-tech industries stage judgment and performance evaluation. Based on the perspective of industrial structure, we build the index system of hi-tech industrial development and quantify its development (1995-2012) using Logistic Model. We also evaluate the input and output performance of hi-tech industries (1995-2012) and the integrated performance (2013) of large enterprises in Yangtze river delta area from the aspects of both industry and enterprises.In the fifth chapter, both domestic and international successful experiences of hi-tech industrial structure optimization is discussed. This chapter is further divided into two parts. In the domestic part, we selected Caohejing development zone as typical case and performed in-depth analysis on its successful innovation and transformation development. In the international part, we summarized the successful cases in hi-tech industrial structure optimization from typical countries and their enlightenment on the Yangtze river delta area.The advice and suggestions on hi-tech industrial structure optimization in Yangtze river delta area are put forward in the sixth chapter. With above-mentioned analysis, this chapter proposed the thoughts and countermeasures for hi-tech industrial structure optimization in Yangtze river delta area from the aspects of regional economic integration, reformation, and export-orientated economy. Meanwhile, this chapter discussed how to maximize Shanghai’s leading effect in hi-tech industrial structure optimization.The seventh chapter is the conclusion and prospect. This chapter summarizes this research’s innovations, and points out the expectation of future research.
