The industrial evolution and urbanization are important to the process of regional economic growth and are the necessary paths of rational allocation of resources. Since Chinese industrial evolution and urbanization had made great progress since reform and opening up, but the non-equilibrium of economic development between regions were increasingly highlighted. The northwest of China, as the economic less-developed region, had fallen behind both in the industrial evolution and urbanization. Therefore, when other regions had achieved a high degree of the industrial development and urbanization, it is very significant to promote the industrial evolution and urbanization of less-developed regions especially in the northwest of China and to the whole industrial innovation and in-depth urbanization in China. Meanwhile, it was also important to the balanced development of regional economy.According to the present theory of the industrial evolution and urbanization, this paper discussed the relationship between them in depth, and found that they adapted to each other and promoted each other. With this important relationship, it studied the interaction between them respectively on the basis of historical review and status analysis of the industrial evolution and urbanization in the northwest of China. Then it further analyzed the driving mechanism and the effect of the industrial evolution to the urbanization from the perspective of industry employment and industry agglomeration in the northwest of China, and the feedback path and scope of urbanization to the industrial structure evolution and its upgrading, and summarized the interactive relationship between them. Finally, the coordination degree between the industrial evolution and urbanization was evaluated by using the comprehensive index system in the five provinces in the northwest of China.Based on the above research, several conclusions were achieved as follows:First, the great progress had been made in the industrial evolution and urbanization in the northwest of China, but there still existed an obvious gap compared to the national average and were in a backward situation. Meanwhile, the non-equilibrium of the industrial evolution and urbanization were very obvious in the northwest of China, and it would be difficult to realize the coordinated growth.Second, the driving effect of the industrial evolution to the urbanization is analyzed from the view of industry employment, finding a large divergence between industry and employment in the northwest of China due to a variety of constraints in the internal structure and external employment environment, which led to the limited driving effect of the industrial structure evolution to the urbanization in this area. The influence of industrial agglomeration to urban agglomeration was analyzed by using spatial statistical method, and finding that there existed obvious spatial coupling between the industrial agglomeration and urban agglomeration in the area, and the industrial agglomeration led to population concentration in the city concentration areas, which resulted in the Unbalanced phenomenon of Urban population spatial distribution in the process of Urbanization. Besides, the industrial structure evolution in the area led to the faster growing of big city scale than the small and medium-sized cities and the differentiation of city scale growth in urbanization based on panel error correction model.Third, the impetus of urbanization to industrial evolution was weak in the northwest of China, and an obvious spatial autocorrelation existed. By building a spatial panel data model, it concluded that the main reasons were as follows:the lagged level of economic development, the weak financial ability, the closed market environment, the regional development intensity, the regional level of openness, and the spatial competition effect of regional industrial agglomeration in the area. The promoting effect of urbanization to industrial upgrading was analyzed by using the spatial threshold weighting matrix, and finding that the spatial spillover effect of urbanization on industrial upgrading in the northwest of China had an obvious spatial attenuation, and its spatial spillover radius was less, which led to the obvious linkage effect of industrial upgrading in urban concentration areas and the effect was not obvious in urban sparse areas.Fourth, the interactive relationship between industrial evolution and urbanization in the northwest of China was further analyzed and summarized by using the panel vector autoregressive model, and it concluded that the interactive relationship was mainly manifested by the interaction between industrialization and urbanization. Besides, the coordination degree of urbanization and industrial evolution was evaluated and analyzed by using the comprehensive index system and entropy weight method, and it concluded that the coordination between the urbanization and industrial evolution was low in the northwest of China and further weakened the interaction between them. Finally, based on the fundamental relation of interactive relationship between urbanization and industrial evolution in the northwest of China, it concluded there existed some losses in economic efficiency once they were separated in the process of promoting the development of industries and urbanization in the northwest of China, and the both should be combined effectively and constantly promote their development to achieve balanced growth in the region.
