Urban agglomeration is the result of productivity development and gradually optimization of productive factors. On the context of economic globalization and regional integration, urban agglomeration has become the important spatial organization form of international productivity distribution system and areal division of labor. Developing urban agglomeration is beneficial for optimizing resource, improving radiation and promotion ability of the core city and enhancing all cities’development in this urban agglomeration. According to the first central working conference on urbanization convened by CPC central committee and’the State Plan of New Urbanization (2014-2020)’, urban agglomeration is the main body to promote new urbanization and the important carrier to shoulder the responsibility of dominating state urbanization development. There are lots of cities within the urban agglomeration which have a certain relationship to each other through location, transportation, migration, resource cooperation and so on. The carrier on which links are being produced between cities includes infrastructure and industrial division. Cities will have competition or cooperation, on the basis of link, which is dynamic, which means the relationship can be adjusted with city functional change that will be influenced by transportation, industry, regulation and so on. There are a wide variety of factors affecting city’s development, especially the competition and cooperation between the city and the other cities within the urban agglomeration have a certain impact on its self. Therefore, this paper mainly starts with the competition and cooperation between cities in the urban agglomeration and then conducts quantitative measure of these two kinds of relationship, after that, validates their impacts on the city’s development. Discussion about cities relationship between each other within urban agglomeration plays a vital role in promoting cities’ integral coordinated development in urban agglomeration. After reading related literature at home and abroad about research on the inter-city relationship of urban agglomeration and its impact on city development, I establish a theoretical analysis framework---- "relationship—path—impact" and study on the inter-city relationship of urban agglomeration and its impacts on city development taking Wuhan urban agglomeration as empirical study area combined with foreign practical experience of relatively mature urban agglomeration development. There are seven chapters in this dissertation, specific as follows:Chapter one is the introduction. It includes research thoughts, background, significance and methods. The related literature and this dissertation’s innovation points are also focused on. Chapter two is the establishment of theoretical analysis framework----"relationship-path-impact". Firstly, the definition of inter-city relationship and measurable model are introduced, three kinds of relationship—"competition, cooperation, non-relationship" are put forward. It starts with city development quality, takes five development concepts—"innovative, coordinated, green, open, shared by all" proposed in the fifth plenary session of its 18th Central Committee as elements to make urban agglomeration development quality evaluation index system, conducts measurement of city development quality by means of principle component analysis and then gets every city development quality comprehensive index value and fractal index value within urban agglomeration. In addition, according to the Dendrinos-Sonis (D-S) model, I come up with criteria of inter-city relationship and measure it by SUR. Secondly, the path of inter-city relationship and its impact on city development which contains spatial proximity effect, agglomeration and diffusion effect, factors flow, city network and areal division, as well as the measurable model of the path are introduced. Thirdly, theoretical analysis of the impact on city development from the aspects of inter-city competition and cooperation, respectively, is conducted.Chapter three is the research on the practical experience and inspiration of foreign urban agglomeration development. Great lakes urban agglomeration in North America, American northeastern Atlantic coast urban agglomeration, London-Liverpool urban agglomeration and European northwestern urban agglomeration are picked up to analyzed and summarized. And I find out that intercity relationship really has an important impact on the city development and it is essential to speed up the construction of urban agglomeration integration and pay attention to industrial division and industrial chain establishment. The content from chapter four to chapter seven is the empirical study of the inter-city relationship within Wuhan urban agglomeration and its impact on city development in accordance with the analysis framework "relationship—path—impact".Chapter four focuses on the measurement of intercity relationship within Wuhan urban agglomeration. It starts with nine cities development quality within Wuhan urban agglomeration, takes five development concepts— "innovative, coordinated, green, open, shared by all" as urban agglomeration development quality evaluation index system, conducts measurement of city development quality by means of principle component analysis and then gets Wuhan urban agglomeration development quality comprehensive index value. Afterwards, it concludes that over the period of 2003 and 2014, every city development quality within Wuhan urban agglomeration overall increases year by year. Specifically, Wuhan’s development quality is ahead of that of other cities significantly. Huangshi’s development quality index value ranks the second to Wuhan’s which verifies the position of deputy central city of Huangshi in Wuhan urban agglomeration. Then we come to know the intercity relationship on the basis of city comprehensive development quality according to Dendrinos-Sonis model and SUR method, specific as follows: there is competition relationship between Huangshi, Wuhan and Xianning while cooperation between QianJiang and Tianmen; in terms of city development comprehensive quality, Ezhou cooperates with Wuhan, Huangshi, Xiantao, respectively while competes with Huanggang, Xianning; Xiaogan cooperates with Huanggang, Xianning while competes with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Xiantao, Qianjiang, Tianmen; Huanggang cooperates with Xianning while competes with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Xiaogan, Qianjiang; Xianning cooperates with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Xiaogan, Qianjiang while competes with Huanggang; Xiantao cooperates Huanggang, Xianning while competes with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Qianjiang; Qianjiang cooperates with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Xiaogan, Xiantao, Tianmen while competes with Huanggang, Xianning; Tianmen cooperates with Huanggang, Xianning while competes with Wuhan, Huangshi, Ezhou, Xiaogan, Xiantao, Qiangjiang. In addition, it measures intercity relationship of Wuhan urban agglomeration from the aspects of city development innovation, city development coordination, city development green attribute, city development openness, and city development sharing.Chapter five is the empirical study on Wuhan urban agglomeration from the path by which intercity relationship is produced according to the analysis framework of "relationship—path—impact". It introduces the Wuhan urban agglomeration general natural geographical and social economic conditions, analyses its economic spatial structure by means of ESDA, conducts quantitative research with global spatial autocorrelation method, local spatial autocorrelation method and spatial variation function method, and draws conclusions that it generally presents the situation of agglomeration in terms of economic spatial structure, especially inside of Wuhan urban agglomeration; in the process of local spatial evolvement, economic hotspot area is steady while the variation of sub-hotspots and sub-coldspots is increasing, which means the economic development imbalance within urban agglomeration exists. Furthermore, economic high-zone appears around Wuhan city and sprawls into other areas while trough areas mainly locate in the northeastern Wuhan urban agglomeration in the light of spatial variation function. With the help of SNA, Wuhan urban agglomeration is seen being behind compared to Yangtze river delta urban agglomeration and the pearl river delta urban agglomeration in terms of comprehensive networked density. The change of city-central-degree related position is slow with regional feature while Wuhan’s core position is highlighted, which means cities’ spatial economic link tends to be unbalanced. When studying on every city’s industrial division within Wuhan urban agglomeration, it is found that the grey correlation degree of every city industrial structure is in the range between 0.65 and 0.87 in 2013 by means of city industry specialization index and location entropy grey correlation analysis, which means the city’s industrial structure similarity with the whole industrial structure is not very great, in other words, there is certain regional feature. I also measure statically and dynamically the spatial shift-share of every city’s three industrial structure within Wuhan urban agglomeration, it turns out that not all the cities employ industrial structure effect, the cities in the circle could not get great benefits from the specialization division, and spatial location effect has not established.Chapter six is the validation of the impacts on city development imposed by intercity competition and cooperation within Wuhan urban agglomeration according to the "relationship—path—impact" analysis framework. I adopt the panel data estimation method and pick up variables respectively representing competition and cooperation, then put them into the city development quality impact research and I get that competition hinder not only the improvement of the city itself development quality but also the other cities development qualities. While I put cooperation variables into the regression equation of city development quality impact and I get that cooperation is beneficial for the city itself and other cities development quality. And then I propose suggestions about enhancing intercity cooperation within Wuhan urban agglomeration which include establishing benefit sharing and compensation mechanism, implementing cooperation incentive system with encouraging multiple main bodies participation, making innovative and cooperative strategy.Chapter seven refers to the summary and outlook. It mainly focuses on refining and summarizing the whole research contents. It also tells the weakness of this research and the issues needed to be further perfected. The innovative point of this dissertation mainly refers to my research on the intercity relationship of urban agglomeration and its impacts on city development in accordance with the analysis framework "relationship—path—impact". When measuring the intercity relationships, I start with city development quality, take five development concepts—"innovative, coordinated, green, open, shared by all" proposed in the fifth plenary session of its 18th Central Committee as elements to make urban agglomeration development quality evaluation index system, then get every city’s development quality comprehensive index value and at last by means of SUR make sure there are three kinds of relationships "competition, cooperation and non-relationship" existing between cities within urban agglomeration on the basis of city development quality.
