This dissertation is concerned with a central question of whether there are common space laws of the Chinese traditional settlements as an inhabitation system and tries to explore Chinese traditional settlements spatial structure in three aspects: the way to divide different levels in settlement system, the characteristics of space structure of individual settlement in every level in settlement system, and the relation between settlement spatial hierarchy and traditional society.A multidimensional space level description framework of Chinese traditional settlements is established by combining multidisciplinary viewpoints. Three types of material level are defined as system level, scale level and size level; three types of social level are defined as rank level, no-rank level and function level. It is clear that the space schema study, which appeared respectively in the 1990's and is analyzed as a whole, is the method to describe the characteristics of Chinese traditional space, and the"social - position"schema is proposed independently in order to reveal the corresponding relationship between the social relations and the spatial position in Chinese traditional space planning. The"social - position"schema is composed of the main schema of"in-out"group category and the secondary schema of body position and universal position. The connotation and function of center and boundary is clear as settlement elements and the explanation for the way of spatial level gradually produced is given as the principle of the main schema nested and the secondary schema overlap and cross. The cases of the ancient literature, the different scale individual settlement and regional settlement system are analyzed by the multidimensional space level description framework and the"social - position"schema. Through the different scale individual case analysis including the residential building, the architecture complex, towns, villages and walled settlements, specific physical form and social connotation of the center and the boundary is understood in different cases. The ideal mode of the settlements system level division and the social-space order in the Pre-qin era is analyzed based on the ancient literature. The settlements system in the Ming and Qing dynasties in Liaoning province is analyzed as regional case, the Jianzhou Nüzhen settlements and Liaodong military defense settlements show the"growing"and"desgined"types of the development process of settlements level system. In the case analysis, some explanation different from previous studies is put forward about the settlement level composition in the XiangSui system of Zhou dynasty and the formation of the Liaodong military settlements system in Ming dynasty, and the feature is summarized about the settlement spatial structure development of Pre-qing Jianzhou Nüzhen. It is revealed in different cases that the space level structure of Chinese traditional settlement has the polysemous superposition characteristic, and the three questions are discussed widely.
