As close neighbor, the communication between Korea and China has been experiencing a long historical period with its content covering full range of social aspects. The object studied by this thesis is "the Image of China in Korean modern Literature" which is precisely the product of cultural communication between Korea and China. Originated in France, "Imagologie" of Comparative Literature mainly studies the description of the other countries in the literature of a certain country. In the category of Comparative Literature, the definition of image is "the general recognition of another country formed in the course of its liberalization and socialization".The object of this thesis is the image of China in Korean literature ranging from 1920's up to 1930's, primarily those in novels and essays. From a historical point of view, China had been an absolute "other" for Korea until pre-modern time because of its status of the center of international relationship to Korea as well as its Confucian culture being the criteria of civilization level. But such state was converted along with the beginning of modernization of Southeast Asian area Thus in modern context the image of China also started changing. Like most East Asian countries, the modernization of Korea developed during the course of enlargement of Western colonialism. Along with the destruction of China's status as an absolute "other" under the impact of Western countries, Korea obtained a context in which they were able to read China objectively. In such a social cultural environment, formed the image of China in Korean modern literature. Therefore, the duty of this thesis is obvious, which is first master the imageof China in Korean literature as well as its features, then explain its context and the procedure of its formation. For this purpose, attention should be paid on the following aspects.1. Korean view of China in modem contextThe modernity of China and Korea share a feature in common, that is, they were both set up in colonial (semi-colonial) context. Korean writers' China experiencing had focused on recognizing and mastering the modernity. Therefore this thesis will first illuminate the view about China of modern Korean writers in order to describe the overall context in which the image of China came into being.2. Ideological image and Utopian ImageIn "Imagologie", image is divided into two categories, which are ideological image and Utopian image. Ideological image means the expression of recognition of domestic social cultural situation by means of the other country's image. Utopian image means the denial and subversion of domestic social cultural situation by means of the other country's image. For Korean literati, the society and culture of their own country was in depressive state under the conquer of Japanese colonialism. Therefore through analyzing the two type of China image, we may observe the condition of historical consciousness and national identity of Korean literati.3. Misreading of cultureMisreading means mistaken cognizance of the object by the cognizing subject. The validity of the cognizance is closely connected with the subjective volition. Facing with the false prosperity of Chinese big cities like Shanghai that was built up with colonial capital, the Korean literati showed a special kind of misreading, that is, "deliberate misreading". They were enchanted by the superficial appearance of splendid modern city and would not or would rather not recognize the interior colonial essence while even forget their own identity ofa lost-country nationality. In this thesis, China image will be divided into three categories and be dealt with respectively. The three categories are: the image of city, the image of countryside and the image of Chinese. Image of the other country is a "The other" introduced into a certain nation or a group of people in order to explain the culture of their own. By looking into the mutual motive relationship of the "other" and the ego, creators of image of "The other"...
