Ancient Chinese characters have been playing an important role both in the history of development of Chinese character and the world character. Its great cognition value shows in the research on the General Written Languages, Written Linguistic Comparison, Written Language History, Yi characters distributing in the four provinces of Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou and Guangxi is one of old characters not only in the Chinese minority characters but also among the world written languages. Comparing with other died ancient characters, Yi characters express strong vitality and they are still alive, they have been using up to now. Yi characters have a special status both in the history of Chinese character and the world written language. It shares the common ground on the word-formation, character style, and character's usages and so on with other nations' ancient characters. However, it has its own unique nature. Therefore, it is a special case to do some comparison with other characters and deeply careful research on Yi characters is very meaningful without doubt. It is a new and meaningful try to probe into those questions scientifically in the terms of synonymy comparison which have not been solved or have settled down incompletely by now. This dissertation is based on these mentioned above.There are five chapters in this dissertation:The first chapter is Introduction. It overlooks Yi language addressing forms and distributing areas, genesis and Yi character documents and standard Yi characters. Then, there is a full-scale summary on the study situation about 30 year research on the Yi characters in China, concerning creation time of Yi characters, origins, relations with other signs, natures, structures, standardization, reference book compilation, information management, academic construction of Yi character and so on. Study clue and ways are introduced at the end of this chapter.The second chapter is Study on the Yi Characters Synonymy Comparison of Four Provinces. There are three parts in this chapter. First, there is an account for Yi character material choice rules, and material origins as well as a synonymy comparison list. The author has made statistics on the same Yi characters among four provinces, three provinces and between two provinces on the base of the same origin. Eight conclusions have been drawn on Yi character correlation consequently according to last two parts.The third chapter is the Study on the Synonymy Comparison of Ancient Chinese and Yi Characters. This chapter focuses on the Yi characters development phase through the comparison of borrowed-characters between ancient Chinese and Yi characters. The author points out that Yi characters are just on the cross and there are two ways before it: one is to be syllabic characters; the other is much more effective ideogram-syllable characters. There is a special topic on the numerals and ganzhi characters of Chinese and Yi and then a theoretical conclusion turns out.The fourth chapter is mainly on the Two Questions after the Synonymy Comparison.
