Macro-study emphasizes on the occurrence, characteristic, propagators, media, modes and paths, and the multiple historical records of Vulgar Fu, such as history biography, bibliography, sketches, encyclopedia, selected works, etc., as well as communication and reception states of Vulgar Fu in different historical period.First, Vulgar Fu has amusement function. Folk riddles are the origin of Vulgar Fu. As play is a kind of instinct of human, it provides relaxation and pleasure to human. Authors and propagators tend to accept and communicate with Vulgar Fu because of the "happiness", since it is nothing to do with politics and life significance. The value judgment function of Vulgar Fu is thus less than its amusement function. Second, Vulgar Fu has communication function, and embodies the complex identity of propagators. The propagators consist of folk artists, intellectuals, commoner, etc. during the early days. Subsequently, vocational clowns and scholar voluntary evolve to be participants of Vulgar Fu's creation. Usually, Vulgar Fu propagated with the synchrony by some major forms of passing down from one generation to another, from oral communication to written communication, and vice versa. At the same time, Vulgar Fu propagated with time depends on documents records of history biography, bibliography, sketches, encyclopedia, selected works, Fu criticism, and scholar imitative writing in successive dynasties. However, Vulgar Fu got lost significantly in the course of communication. Reasons can vary from the elegant or popularized concept evolvement, the politics of imperial power and Confucianism control over Vulgar Fu, to the backward techniques of record and communication. Last, Vulgar Fu has "practical" function. On the one hand, it is the original meaning of being "practical". The earliest rhyme singing was ritual writing which was practiced with music education with "Fu", and was the main way that the intellectuals propagated poetry. In fact, the "miscellaneous Fu" in Han Shu: Yi Wen Zhi contains ritual writing. On the other hand, it is the extended meaning of "practical", namely Vulgar Fu by borrowing various practical writing. For example, all of the practical writings such as biao, zou, quan, jian, yi, xi, shuo, lun, etc. were borrowed by Vulgar Fu from Han to Nanbei dynasties. Concurrently, Vulgar Fu often infiltrates actively into other styles, and enhances its communication. Such modern artistic forms as prose, poetry, fiction, theatre, etc. all accept manyelements of Vulgar Fu.
