Wang Tao's novels are very important in the classical Chinese novel history of lateQing dynasty and are valuable to study independently. In the introduction of this thesis,the author reviews Wang Tao studies in the last one hundred years, finds out that thestudies on Wang Tao's novels is still inefficient.The mainbody of this thesis is composed of six parts. The first chapter reviews allWang Tao's life. Being different from the ordinary authors, Wang Tao leaded a verycomplicated life. In the studies on his life experiences, the author emphasizes particularlyon the influence of his thoughts development on the creation of stories. According to thedefinition of classical Chinese novel, the second chapter fixes its research objects onWang Tao's five anthologies of Haizouyeyoulu,Huaguojutan,Dunkulanyan,Songyinmanlu and Songbinsuohua, and then studies their editions and the influence ofmodern commercial culture on his novel creation. The third chapter analyzes Wang Tao'sthoughts on novel and its influence on his creation. In the fourth and fifth chapters, theauthor bases the study on these stories' themes that are mainly fall into four classes ofwar, knight-errant, romance and courtesan. The first two themes relate closely to WangTao's political thoughts while the latter two themes to his emotional and personalexperiences. The last chapter analyzes his novelistic creation technique.The appendix includes the chronological table of Wang Tao, study on Wang Tao'sfriends and travel, Wang Tao studies resources and Wang Tao's novel theory resources.
