Zutangji is an important literature for linguistic studies. This study aimed at exploring the development of prepositions in Modern Chinese, and some corresponding problems, by comprehensive investigating the prepositions in Zutangji and other Zen literatures of Tang and Song Dynasty.This paper included nine parts. It began with the introduction by reviewing represented Zen literatures in Tang Dynasty and Song Dynasty, and briefing the significance, purpose and research methods of this study. Chapter One followed then by identifying the standard of prepositions, and outlining the characters of prepositions in Zutangji. The third part was Chapter Two, which discussed the usage, origin and development of 29 prepositions about time and space. Chapter Three arranged seven passive propositions and explored the evolvement and development of passives in Modern Chinese. Chapter Four probed into several disposal prepositions and grammar significance of them. Chapter Five debated the introduce of the usage in Zutangji on beneficial objects and concerning propositions, concomitant and comparative ones, inclusive and exclusive ones. Chapter Six argued the usage, origin and development of several propositions of introducing discourse. Chapter Seven researched into the usage of some prepositions about ground and reason. Inclusion was the last part, which sum up the common rules in the involvement of the prepositions in Mordern Chinese.In a whole, prepositions in Zutangji, a connecting link between the preceding dynasties of Zou, Qin, Han and Wei ,and the following ones of Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing, reflected the characters of acclimatizing the historical change of Chinese. Zutangji was characterized by the amounts and functions of propositions. E.g. compared with preceding and following period, the quantity and function of propositions changed a lot, but some common propositions or some functions of them in Contemporary Chinese were not found still, which mirrored it the early stage of Modern Chinese.
