Based on a great deal of real text corpus, the present paper provides a systematic description and explanation to semantic structure of"Hai"from the prospective of teaching Chinese as a foreign language, combined with linguistic theories such as cognition, grammarization and contextual relation. Furthermore, with the guidance of intermediary language theory and biased errors analysis theory, aiming at helping foreign students study Chinese, it summarizes the common biased error types and occurring causes of Korean students when they use adverb"Hai"and puts forward some feasible methods and constructive suggestions on teaching and learning. Besides introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of six chapters.In the introduction part, the background of the research is specified first. Then it reviews what has been done in this field and states clearly the methodology of this research.The first chapter focuses on time-adverb"Hai", including"Hai 1a"with"continuous"meaning and"Hai 1b"with"already"meaning. It describes their distributing formats and semantic functions while comparing their similarities and differences in terms of semantics and pragmatics.The second chapter stresses degree-adverb"Hai", including"Hai 2a"standing for more and"Hai 2b"standing for less. We regard them as one kind and comparatively analyze their similarities and differences from the semantic prospective.The third chapter discusses the semantic structure and associated function of relation-adverb"Hai", including"Hai 3a"with"accession"meaning and"Hai 3b"with"even"meaning, both of which have associated function in syntax and belong to relation-adverb.The fourth chapter emphasizes mood-adverb"Hai 4"which stands for mood more than sense. It strengthens rhetorical mood as well as confirmative mood. The fifth chapter further concludes the basic meanings of"Hai"based on above-mentioned chapters and describes its semantic network system in modern Chinese with the diachronic clue of evolution of the respective meaning.The sixth chapter undertakes contrastive analysis on Chinese vs. Korean, summarizes the common types and occurring causes of Korean students when they use adverb"Hai".The ending part draws conclusions and points out limitations of the current research, what's more, lays out the direction of further study in the relevant field.
