The Image Of The Police Crisis In Sociological Research

In the development process of police history, people have never emphasized the value and function of police image like today. Good police image could produce good reputation. It could provide strong cohesion to the inside, and strong inspiration, invisible penetration and strong communication ability to the outside. Police image, which is the concentrated reflection of police organization vitality, directly affects the realization of police organization targets, and possesses significant meaning. However, because of various reasons, the current police image is little brighter. The police image crisis problem continuously arouses the attentions of the police organization itself and all circles in the society.This thesis utilizes sociological research method to carry on the empirical study on the police image crisis problem. After describing the current situation of the police image crisis, it makes the comprehensive explanation about the cause of the police image crisis problem by using many related theories in sociology, social psychology, public relations, image studies and media studies.The Thesis mainly consists of four parts, altogether six chapters. Among it, the second and third parts, which are constituted by chapter 2, 3,4, and 5, are the subject parts of the thesis.Part 1:Introduction of the thesis, it includes the parts of reason and significance of this selected topic, related research review, research (?)ent, and research method. Firstly, in the parts of reason and significance of this selected topic and related research review, on the base of the introduction of the Research Backgrounds and the Theoretical and realistic significance, the author lists the related research literatures about the police image and its crisis. Secondly, in the part of the research content, based on the core concepts involved in the thesis, the author lays out the theoretical contexts and the research perspectives, and then introduces the research thought and main contents of the thesis, and explicates the main issues which are mainly explored in the thesis. At last, in the part of the research method, the author introduces the research methods and data collection methods which are used in the research process. This thesis also explains the data collection process and the information about the investigated participants as a whole.Part 2:namely the second chapter of the thesis, it is the theoretical analysis and objective descriptions on the police image crisis problem. In "the police image and its formation" of the first section, the author gives a definition to the concept of "police image", analyzes the three factors of the police image and its formation process, and makes clear certain specific contents of the police image evaluation. In "the police image crisis" of the second section, the author defines the concept of "police image crisis". By surveying the specific contents of the police image evaluation (namely manifestation), it evaluates the current situation of police image, and proves that the police image crisis at present is really existed.Part 3:it includes chapter 3,4, and 5. After proving and describing the current police image crisis, the author makes a comprehensive explanation about the police image crisis. The three factors of the police image crisis formation and the police image formation, which are consist of police organization, social public and mass media, are closely related. Only considering all those integrated factors together, can it analyze and explain the causes of police image crisis comprehensively.In chapter 4, the author first analyzes the internal reasons of police image crisis from police organization itself. Police organization is the foundation of the police image formation. It is because of the police organization expressions in all aspects that the social public can form the cognition, and further form the general impression. Therefore, the problems and insufficiencies of the police organization itself would definitely lead to the police image crisis. This chapter mainly analyzes the internal reasons of the police organization from four aspects:the image position deviation of police organization, the flaws of police organization management system, the overall police organization quality and the police occupational burnout caused by overweight occupational stress. In addition to the above four aspects, police organization also exists other internal reasons, such as the disposition of sudden incidents, the negative (?)ge effects left by history, and abuse of the police uniform and police equipments etc;In Chapter 5, the thesis analyzes the external reasons of the police image crisis from the police image object-psychological characteristics of the social public. In fact, the formation process of police image is the social public's cognitive process towards police organization. It is also the formation process of impression. Therefore, the various psychological characteristics formed in different stages of the cognitive and impressive process would influence the evaluation on police organization, and then cause or aggravate police image crisis. This chapter explores the relationship between the social public's psychological characteristics and police image crisis from four aspects, which are the social public's role expectations towards the police, the social public's selectivity of receiving information in their cognitive process, the cognitive deviation in the impressive formation process, and the influence of rumor and other public opinions;In chapter 6, the thesis analyzes the external reasons of the police image crisis from the information media-mass media. The guidance of the mass media plays an important role to the social public. This chapter makes the news media and film works as representative to analyze the mass media's influence on the police image crisis. Part 4:the last part of the thesis, namely chapter 6, it's the final summary and discussion of this research. The author summarizes the research achievements, discusses the countermeasures to the police image crisis problem, points out the deficiencies in the research process at present, and some conceptions and ideas about direction and topics for the further relative research.
