How to achieve coordinated regional development is not only the common outstanding issue that the world faces, but also a hot one that the Chinese people are concerned about. China is a great developing country with a territory of 9.6 million k m?and a population of 1.2 billion , the social- economic imbalance between East and West constitutes one of the basic conditions of China. How to adopt effective measures, set up sound mechanism and prompt harmonious eastern-western development, so as to control the disparity within the bearable range of mentality, and advance it in the direction of gradual narrowness, is both a major theoretical issue and a major realistic issue that is related to the sustainable and coordinated development and social stability and unity of the peoples. On the basis of investigating into the basic rules of regional economy, and scientifically elucidating a series of problems in the progress, the author tries to seek a viable way suitable for China with less cost, thus making an attempt to direct China to eventual realization of coordinated development. The jumping-off point and the ending point of this thesis are both the realization of coordinated regional development. Specifically, the author spreads out his research from the two angles of time and space, the former including two layers, which are the study of internal development of a region and that of inter-regional development, while the latter evolving the current and the future of coordinated regional development, i.e. the problem of sustainable development .So, it is clear that to study macroscopically and comprehensively is one big characteristic of this paper. Chapter one: Theoretical study of coordinated regional development. As the theoretical basis, this chapter first defines the term of coordinated regional development, then proceeds to analyze the existing domestic and foreign theories of regional development, and then makes further modification and perfection to the past viewpoints after appraising them. Finally, by comparative analysis, the author makes objective introduction and evaluation of the four regional coordination modes in history one by one, and on this foundation advances the assumption of formulating the regional coordination model under socialist market economy. Chapter two: Internal coordinated development of a region. First, this chapter makes a reasonable perspective of intra-regional coordinated development of economy and society, elucidates the definitions and yardsticks of economic development and social progress, and Marxist view of coordinated economic and social development; Second, it realistically...
