It is a win-win choice for China and Japan, the two important Asian countries, to keep mutual amity and peaceful development. "Cooperation means mutual benefits, and confliction means mutual loss"—this is the most significant historical experience of China's Reform and Opening-Up of 30 years. The Sino-Japanese relation, as a whole, involves various domains, of which political, economic, and cultural sub-relations are three main domains. The international exchange in the three domains has displayed the relations of both cooperation and confliction between the two nations. And the development of Sino-Japanese relations in the three domains has exerted great influence on the Chinese modernization. Sticking to the Marxist principle of historical materialism, with the modernization perspective, the dissertation aims to reveal the characteristics of Sino-Japanese relation with the careful research of its development process within 30 years of China's Reform and Opening-Up. It lays emphasis on the analysis of positive and negative roles of political, economic, and cultural relations between China and Japan in the Chinese political, economic, and cultural modernization. In addition, Sticking to the combination of history and theory, the dissertation strives to make a fair and objective observation and study of the above questions.The dissertation involves introduction, the main body of five chapters, and Conclusion. The introduction part presents the significance and main contents of the research, and the structure and research methods of the dissertation. Chapter 1 makes a retrospective study of the Sino-Japanese relation. The Sino-Japanese relation, having experienced the "sweet stage" at the beginning of China's Reform and Opening-Up and the "conflict stage" after the cold war, now is stepping into a new stage of constructing strategic reciprocity. There are deep causes behind the relation evolvement. The development of Sino-Japanese relation in the 21 century are faced with both precious opportunities and grave challenges. Chapter 2 shows that it is meaningful to interpret the development of the Sino-Japanese relation in the modernization perspective. In terms of early modernization of the two nations, they are both exogenously developed with the challenge of Western modern civilization. The differences between the two nations in politics, economics, culture, and international climate became the main causes of their different results of early modernization. Besides, in terms of Chinese modernization after the Reform and Opening up, Chinese development requires funds, technology, and peaceful climate, and the development of Sino-Japanese relation has a positive roles to Chinese modernization. So the development of Sino-Japanese relation must be highly valued for Chinese development today and in the future. Chapter 3 makes a detailed analysis of the influence of Sino-Japanese trade relations on Chinese economic modernization. After 1980s , Sino-Japanese relation involves three main aspects of trade, investment, and official development assistance. On the one hand, the Sino-Japanese bilateral trade has promoted Chinese economic development; and the Japanese investment in China has provided funds, technology, and management expertise for Chinese economic development and improved the quality of Chinese products. The yen loan to China also has become an important source of funds of Chinese modernization. On the other hand, however, the Sino-Japanese economic conflicts and the "Chinese-economic-threat-theory" have impacted Chinese economic development greatly. Chapter 4 discusses the influence of Sino-Japanese political relations on Chinese political modernization. The development of political relation between China and Japan has provided peaceful and stable climate for Chinese political modernization. The high-rise of China and Japanese promulgated policy benefits to Chinese modernization. However, the Sino-Japanese political frictions intensified the international tensions and the "Taiwan Issue" has become a serious threat to Chinese political security.Chapter 5 analyzes the influence of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange on Chinese cultural modernization.The positive roles of Sino-Japanese cultural exchange have many aspects. Chinese people in Japan is a important power to Chinese cultural modernization. Cultural exchange quickened the prosper of our library market and the abundance of Chinese language, promoted the development of our higher education. The volunteer assistance on the cultural education project of Japanese ODA and Japanese cultural can inspired the development Chinese cultural industry and so on. In the meanwhile, the Japanese cultural export to China also has made certain negative influence on Chinese cultural security and Juvenile psychology. It also has caused obvious psychological estrangement from Japan in China. We can't neglect it. The dissertation ends with a brief summary of its whole contents and points out the aspects that still need to be elaborated and deeply researched.
