This dissertation is an empirical study about the population of Uighur migrants adapting to urban life in Beijing. Since the 1980's, of the 20's century, the population of Uighur migrants working and doing business in Beijing and in mainland cities has been increasing. Expansion of the migrating population of minority nations has enriched city life in mainland China where the resident majority is Han who have a different cultural influence. This resident majority provide the minority nationalities with opportunity to work, develop their business, gain their skills and broaden their horizons for future growth. At the same time the great differences in living environment and cultural background between these diverse peoples is bound to cause a variety of social friction, psychological conflicts and some cultural misunderstanding.Among the other minority migrants in Beijing, the Uighur migrants have their own unique language, cultural background and national psychological characteristics. Therefore, the current difficulties of urban life of Han citizens and other ethnic minorities became increasingly difficult and more complex for Uighur migrants. Therefore, Uighur migrant minorities faced more difficulties in these unfamiliar situations and thus became the vulnerable group of migrants. In recent years, in Beijing and other mainland cities, local residents have paid more attention to Uighur migrants. The response of the indigenous population has been more negative in general. There have been precedents of misunderstanding, exclusion and discrimination. The explanation and definition of this phenomenon is the subject of an investigation by national science researchers.Studying the condition of urban fluid minority is of importance both academically and in practice. This dissertation is based on the phenomena of Uighur minority behavior in the urban environment. It uses the relative theories of ethnics and anthropology to explore the process of Uighur migrants adapting to metropolitan living by the processes of in-depth interviewing, participant observation, questionnaire etc., etc.It is envisaged that with the research of the dissertation, the results will expand the field of ethnics and anthropology and further the understanding of the relative problems in those areas. It will help understand the behavior of the minority Uighur migrants, pushing the communication and social support between city management, indigenous population and Uighur minority migrants. It will also identify problem areas between the Uighur migrants and help them adapt to urban living. It will also promote better relations between the various nationalities in the cities leading to more harmonious and united direction in the future.
