Based on the methodology of historical and dialectical materialism, this dissertation is trying to analyse the social, practical and philosophicalroots of cooperatiVe education which was first initiated in early 20t,century. With sufficient historical dada as well as the latest developmentinformation gained through author's intemational communication, thedissertation reviews and analyses the develoPment and evolution ofcooperative education in last fifty years and searches for its intention, basic features, attribution and universal princiPle. In the light of SPecificconditions in China, the dissertation discuses the necessity and feasibilityof our implementation of cooPerative education, analyses the problemsand rest fictions we have come across, and proposes countermeasures forits further development with the uninterrupted grOwth of market economyin China.Cooperative education had its seeds in the thought of labor educationand aPpeared in an embryonic form of work-based leaming emerging inthe early days in Europe. The Utilitarian Idea of American Universityaroused with the "Land Grant ACt" and the "State University Movement"in the period from late l9 century to early 20 century in the United Stateslaid a fOundation for cooperative education, a link of education and socia1needs, to smash the bonds of Traditional Idea of American University andcame into being. The great vitality of the cooperative education in aboutone hundred years has made it widely recognized by both developed anddeveloping countries as a new educational strategy of which integrationof academic stUdy and real-world work exPerience not only preParesstudents for the competition in labor market but also increases theadaPtability of higher education to society.Higher education in china is faced with great challenge in thesituation of fast economic development. Problem of lack of qualifiedforefront technicians has not been solved though enrollment of tertiaryeducation is increased in recent years. The increase of number of highereducation stUdents has sped up the popularization of higher education andbrought about a sustained growth of the national economy, but alsoresulted in a more serious problem of graduates' employment. The aUthorbelieves that cooperative education has been proved to be a sound way toincrease student's adaPtability to society thus being an educationalstrategy with great potentialities in China's unintemiPted growth ofmarket economy and greater importance must be attached to it.
