This thesis attempts to achieve three purposes. The first purpose is to reveal and grasp the characteristics, experience and problems of the integrated science curriculum design for 21s' century compulsory education in China, and reveal its advantages by comparing it with the design of subject science curriculum and the local integrated science curriculum of our country from the foundation of P.R.C to the end of 20* century. The second purpose is to investigate into the characteristics and experience of international integrated science curriculum design.Through the investigation, the thesis aims at its third purpose------to search for the strategiesand implication for the further development of the integrated science curriculum design for 21st century compulsory education in China.This thesis consists of three parts. Part I, "Research on Integrated Science Curriculum Design in China", is for the first purpose. It is composed of three chapters, whose topics are "Overview of the History of Science Curriculum Design in China", "Local Integrated Science Curriculum Design for Compulsory Education in China" and "The Integrated Science Curriculum Design for 21st Century Compulsory Education in China".Chapter 1 focuses on characteristics and experience of subject science curriculum design in China from the foundation of P.R.C to the end of 20th century, and gives a brief review of science education and science curriculum design before the foundation of P.R.C as well.Taking the project of integrated science curriculum design for compulsory education of Shanghai for example, Chapter 2 analyzes the characteristics and experience of local integrated science curriculum design for compulsory education in China since the end of 1980s. The analysis involves curriculum fundamentals, objective orientation, content selection, integrating method, curriculum implementation and evaluation. Some important problems of integrated science curriculum design are also discussed in this chapter.Chapter 3 discusses characteristics, experience and problems of the integrated science curriculum design for 21st century compulsory education in China, which emerged in the new curriculum reform" of basic education since the end of 20th. Its advantages are also" discussed by comparing it with the design of subject science curriculum and the local integrated science curriculum of our country from the foundation of P.R.C to the end of 20th century. Meanwhile,Chapter 3 offers perspectives to search for strategies from the characteristics and experience of international integrated science curriculum design.Part II, "Research on International Integrated Science Curriculum Design", aims at analyzing and searching for characteristics and experience of international integrated science curriculum design. It is also composed of three chapters (Chapter 4~Chapter 6), whose topics are "Overview of the International Integrated Science Curriculum Design", "The Integrated Science Curriculum Design Focusing on Integrative Science Factors" and "The Integrated Science Curriculum Design Focusing on the inter-relationship of STS ".In Chapter 4, the author makes an overview of inquiry on civic scientific literacy, the core conception of science curriculum design, and various explorations into the elements of integrated science curriculum in the three waves of international science curriculum reform after World War II. In addition, an overview of the basic integrating principles of international integrated science curriculum design is made in order to grasp the general characteristics and developing trend of international integrated science curriculum design.With the implementation of "Project 2061", a new movement of science curriculum reform started in U.S.A. The design type of integrated science curriculum emerged in this movement, is an international representative integrating type "focusing on integrative science factors".
