The Organization Structure And Management In Chinese Multicampus Universities

The amalgamation of higher education institutions initiated in the early 1990s in Chinaled to the emergence of many multicampus universities. The multicampus universitystudied in this dissertation refers to a new university composed of two or more than twouniversities or colleges which used to have complete function and independentadministrative power. The organization structure is the core issue in the management ofmulticampus universities. It is quite urgent and practical to study the organization structurein multicampus universities. For a long period of time the organization structure of universities in China has beenclose, conservative and stable. These features actually limit the exertion of the universities'function. Since a multicampus university is made up of several one-campus universities,consequently, the limitations of organization structure in one-campus university willnaturally be brought into the multicampus university. Moreover, these limitations willsometimes even be magnified, and thus become more obvious in multicampus university.Structure is closely related to function. Accordingly, in order to perfect the function ofmulticampus universities, it is very necessary to study their organization structure. In addition to the Chapter of "Introduction" (this chapter includes the reasons of doingthe research, the literature review, the statement of the research objects, the researchmethodology, the research pathway and the structure of the whole dissertation) and theChapter of "Conclusion" (this chapter summarizes the main research outcomes, theinnovative points and the issues to be further studied), the main body of this dissertationconsists of 3 parts. The first part (Chapter 2) is the retrospection of the development of organizationtheory. From classic organization theory to the organization theory of behavioral school,and then to modern organization theory, the development of organization theory presentedto be a continuous process; and these theories gradually demonstrated a profound andcomplete understanding of the organization. The second part (Chapter 3, 4 and 5) discusses the organization structure. Chapter 3 IIIdiscusses the organization structure in universities. Firstly, a definition is made on"university organization structure". University organization structure can be defined as thecomponents in a university and the form of the relationship among these components whichis specifically exhibited as the setting of organization units and the form of organizationstructure. The setting of organization units and the form of organization structure inuniversities are both explored in this chapter. Chapter 4 discusses the organization structurein Chinese multicampus universities. Firstly, the chapter clarifies that organization structurein Chinese multicampus universities refers to both the components in a multicampusuniversity and the form of the relationship among these components, which are shown bythe organization form and organization structure form in the multicampus university.Secondly, several main organization forms and organization structure forms in multicampusuniversities are analyzed. Thirdly, the chapter probes into the reasons which have shapedthe current organization structure in multicampus universities. Chapter 5 evaluates theefficiency of the organization structure in Chinese multicampus universities. In this chapter,both analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy synthetical evaluation (FSE) are appliedto quantitatively evaluate the efficiency of organization structure in Chinese multicampusuniversities. Based on the evaluation results and the interviews, a conclusion can be drawnon the main problems of organization structure existing in Chinese multicampusuniversities.
