Given an imperfection of the historical consciousness in the current study of Chinese language education, the thesis is to emphasize the meaning of "history position" in the research of modern Chinese language education and provide some suggestions for the current language education and its research, passing through the development of Chinese modern language education during its earlier period. The study contains four parts as follows:Firstly, the language education research is done for approaches to contemporary education problems from a historical angle of view of education research, namely the history culture. The contemporary problems are suggested to be solved under the background of the history due to the reality of imperfection of historical awareness in the contemporary language education research. In addition to the importance of historical approach in the research, some terms—"language", "language education", "modern language education", "earlier period" are defined again and a brief account of textual writing way is given in this part.Secondly, the thesis interprets some internal and external reasons affecting the change of the development of the modern Chinese language education. The change from a pre-academics period to an academics period makes the language education have a "modern" content. On the one hand, the ancient language education is characteristic of "ethics", "political", "outside" and "past", which is not fit to the modern society. Consequently, the language education is forced to have a change for the modern society. On the other hand, Chinese language education is forced to have a difficult change toward "modern" because of the variety of particular social situations in Opium War in the Chinese history.And then, the thesis discusses three features (popularization, humanization, and scientificalness ) of the development of Chinese modern language education in its earlier days.
