Yan Xishan is a complicated and fickle warlord with distinct individuality. On the one hand, he had natural dispositions of military expansion and political antiforeign which the common warlords had. On the other hand, he displayed different individualities, such as being good at thinkings, pursuing the effects, paying attention to talents and craving running schools. These were one extrinsic manifestion of his special individualities. He not only advocated establishing compulsory education, talents education, vocational education and social education vigorously, but also established several experimental private schools with his own funds. Investigating Yan Xishan's educational theory and practiceit can not only provide new research angles for academic circles to investigate the phenomenon that warlords established education, but also provide experience and enlightenment to develop regional educations nowadays.Preface investigates "Yan Xishan phenomenon" that warlords established education, elaborates the cause of selecting topic, outlines the present research situations and academic tendency, but also expounds the thesis connotation, research ways and basic frames. Meanwile, it sum up vigorously the conceiving and writing of the full article.Chapter One,"The Reasons and Motivations that Yan Xishan Established Shanxi's Education", analyses the internal and external reasons that Yan Xishan was so devoted into establishing schools ,such as the long schooling traditions of Shanxi, Yan Xishan's deep motherland ideas, personal interest of paying attention to education, deep impression of studying in Japan, suggestion of educational subordinates group , common practice of governors' establishing education in the late Qing Dynasty and requires of political governing in 1920s-1930s,etc.Chapter Two,"Cultivating Foundation by Compulsory Education: Compulsory Education Kept ahead" , excavates the influence to Shanxi's compulsory education of Yan Xishan's schooling ideas and investigates policy assurance, funds collecting, teachers training, curriculum planning, actual situation of teaching, supervising system and implementing effect. It shows vividly the developping situations and schooling experience of Shanxi compulsory education in that period so that it can provide helpful experience and enlightenments to the implementation of free compulsory education and the popularity of education in West China.Chapter Three, "Trainning Elite by Talented Education: Unique Talented Education System", according to Yan Xishan's talented education plans, summarizes and analyses education methods and implemental effects of higher education, normal education and secondary education that concerning directly Yan Xishan. It also summarizes different rules and characteristics of several kinds of talented education. Simultaneously, it discusses unique talented multivating patterns in Yan Xishan's mind, such as higher elementary schools, Talent-education Halls and administrative research institutes. It is helpful to understand regional talented education patterns in Period of the Repbulic of China through the article.Chapter Four, "Making Lives by Vocational Education: Struted Industry by Vocational Education", observes the reason and background that Yan Xishan established vocational education. It also researches the practice of various regular vocational education and non-regular vocational education, especially the unique school pattern of DaiYue Livestock Farming Vocational School which completely manifested Yan Xishan's educational theory. It provides many useful experience for us to establish vocational education vigorously.Chapter Five, "Influencing the Populace by Social education: Managed the Local Territory as Education Target", investigates the implemental situation of social education in Shanxi guided by Yan Xishan's social enlightenment theory. It also traces and analyses the motivations, manin bodys, activities, contents and methods of Shanxi social education comprehensively. Simultaneously, it not only investigates the importance of Popular Education Hall in social education, but also makes special investigations to the national languages and phonetic letters which were implemented firstly. It is for the purpose of discussing the success experience that Yan Xishan combined social education with political propaganda and the helpful attempts that he built the atmosphere of popular education so that it can provide historical reference for the new period.Chapter Six, "A total evaluvation about Yan Xishan's establishing Shanxi education", mainly summarizes the characteristics of Shanxi education development in the Period of the Repbulic of China.Simultaneously, it gets experience and lessons to present regional education development from historical facts that Yan Xishan established Shanxi education.Epilogue, mainly analyses "Yan Xishan phenomenon", summarizes the successful expirience and internal essence of warlords who established education in various regions, meanwhile, makes a brief summary to the study of this problem in order to investigate the significance of methodology that used into figure study.
